Just Cars Insurance is a division of AAMI and they were formed to insure risk type clients, ie. previous speeding convictions, previous claims, high risk vehicles.
They might insure you but they are used to insuring things like 16 year olds with WRX's or skylines, things like that, if they will insure you it will be for market value ONLY and will charge through the roof.

Contact Shannons, they will insure you and will offer a fixed value insurance, not market value.
Market value for your bus is something like $2-3k.
Dont forget that they must be informed of the modifications and it MUST be legal.

There is a get out clause in ALL policies that states that the vehicle must be legally allowed on the road, in other words they will insure your bus with a V12 or something as silly but when you come to make a claim they can refuse payment if the vehicle was not roadworthy or had modifications that they were not informed about or modifications that were not allowed by your states motor reg.

Sorry to go on about this but there are quite a few cars here in S.A. that are regoed as 1200 but have 2.? in them, they are insured but if they have a smash and go to make a claim they will have no insurance as they were not checked by Transport S.A.
Now if they have a smash they can be sued by the other party and they could loose their house etc.

Cheers
Dave

most companies have just said no mods allowed, RACV gave me a VERY reasonable quote of about $320, then all of a sudden an underwriter decided the engine wasnt right and deleted my policy (had already been given a policy number and everything) without explanation before the poor woman who was helping me could find out why. Shannons tried to deny me, but after soem discussion offered me a quote of approx $900 (although i think this was for comprehensive), Vigil and Justcars have given me 3rd party/fire theft quotes in the 6 - 700 range, so Im a bit lost. was sorta hoping for somethign more in the RACV price bracket, havent yet tried Unique. getting real depressed here, why wont people people insure a registered roadworthy legal vehicle which is more reliable then stock?!?

Yeah I know what you mean, try getting a 2nd hand jap import fully insured. Some will outright say no, most think about it and then offer a quote with some really insane clause and may or may not be in you favour.

The other option is get incontact with an insurance broker and see what they have to say. The may be able to come up with a policy for a good price.

Anyway best of luck.

It also depends on your age.
If under 25 then the premium skyrockets.

just sorta depressing after all the work that has gone into the vehicle surely they should realise it will be treated better then a stock POS lancer and therefore is safer to insure!?

How much do you drive it?

coz Shannons did me a really good deal for mine, just 3rd party, and it's way more 'dangerous' than your's is. 😀

A mate said it's even cheaper if it's insured as your second car or something.

Don't take the under 25 under 30 crap.

Tell 'em you'll go to court.

It is illegal!

I did it when I was 21. "Yeah yeah", they said "we've heard that before." They got the writs from a lowly solicitor - I bet they were laughing while waiting at the Supreme Court. Shit themselves when I turned up with a famous silk (a Q.C.)! They couldn't wait to settle.

If you have the means to go through with it they will kiss your arse all the way home because they know their position can't be held up in court.

But they don't have to insure you if they don't want to. Go to a broker.Let them do the work.

ryan

i am going through similar problems with mine.

i have come to the following conclusion:

there is nt any point being insured if the insurance company does an investigation (after you have crashed and made a claim) and finds out that the mods have not been done to an engineers satisfation and the car doesnt have an engineers certificate.

whilst i highly recommend shannons, and i have been told that they will not investigate, i am a bit sceptical of this. they are in the business of making money, and if i wipe out a $300,000 car or worse still, i injure or kill someone (hope this never happens to you me or anyone else) they will do eveything they can to avoid paying. as will the 3rd party coverage from vicroads.

whats the point of having insurance if you are not covered?

either take the risk and get the minimal you can get away with, or play it by the book and get an engineering certificate like me (at great time and effort and expense)

this is the unfortunate reality of our hobby.

most people out there will not be covered if the shite hits the fan

where dos this leave a 17 year old who loves his car and is struggling to get through basic life at this point in time??
i think i might just have to risk it as i just cant afford it i here you brother i here you!! it really sucks!!
i know its the old "oh what if u hit a $250000 porsche u will owe that much for the rest of your life etc etc etc" but then u read other peoples storis saying they have comprehensive insurance nd they got hit by a uninsured bloke and thre comprehensive is paying up or whateva
its bad enough paying near $450 for a greenslip and another $220 to the rta by the time u do that and insure it for 3rd party say goodbye $1000 every single year FUCK THAT IT PISSES ME RIGHT OFF!!!!!!!

hey i can tell you from experience that shannons investigates all claims, but i cant see why you having trouble getting your car passed by an engineer cause i had the same motor setup in chaos and got it passed easy. he was more worried about the steering wheel than the engine

....does it depend on the assessor...are they consistent even within companies??? Just asking...

So far I don't see problems naming the companies...you are being reasonable....just asking questions...not cannning anyone just frustrated by it all...

But yes don't start dissing anyone.....😎

Keep it a reasonable discussion .........any insurance company that wants your business should be taking note....

OK....do they require engines to be professionally installed....??? Like rewiring a house (or at least hooking up to mains)...need an A Grade electician for it to be approved....or is it just other regulations we're talking about...we all know so many guy fit their own engines in...Does a an invoice from a motor mechanic saying he has installed the engine help?

or is it all in relation so what your running in a particular standard of car...

....this is a girl question hey😉 🙂

they dont care how the engine's installed, just that it is installed, not once have i been asked about an engineers etc, it doesnt seem to matter that the previous subi engine was engineer certified, that the current one was looked at for rwc by my mech and one of the big vicroads dudes or that my mech checked all the fitup when replacing the bearing a month ago, i have never had a chance to mention these things as simply the fact that it is a non - VW engine is enough for them to can me.
made a few more calls, Young and cool wont insure cars over 15years old (but claim to insure any modified newer car in their adds) and Unique wont touch 'Vans'
will see how GIO goes, can anyone recommend a broker?

Regarding the comment that Shannons dont investigate, they do.
Yes I am an insurance investigator and I am the one that checks if everything is correct.

As I said before.
The insurance companies WILL insure anything, it is your resposibility to have the car legal.
All policies have a get out clause for the insurer, it states words to the effect of, " the vehicle must be legally allowed to be on the road"
That means that if it is allowed by Motor Transport, Vic Roads, (whoever,in your state) and they have authorised your modifications, then you are legal.
Even fitting a 1600 in a car that is supposed to have a 1200, CAN be a reason that the insurance company could deny your claim.
If the mag wheels are 1 mm over the "allowed" size, they can deny your claim. If you have a bald tyre, they can deny your claim.

Yes you can take the risk and you might not get investigated, usually 1 in every 8 claims is investigated.

Kombi Kid, if you dont have insurance and have an accident with a Porsche, say you write it off and it was worth $250,000, if the owner was insured HIS insurance company will pay HIM out, They will then sue YOU for this amount plus costs, plus legals, Trust me they WILL sue. If you have property, they can get an order that could make you sell the property and any profit goes to them to pay off some of your debt. You could be made bankrupt, this can last up to 7 years, you could then never get another loan, mortgage etc.

Is it worth it now???

They are a business, they have to answer to their share holders, they have to make a profit, so they will use every technicallity not to pay a claim.
Also do not believe brokers, most of them will tell you anything just to get their commission.
ALWAYS read your policy, do not take their word that you will be covered.
I have seen too amny claims where the insured was told " yes you will be covered for that" then they have an accident , then they read their policy and find out that they were not infact covered, its too late then.

Again I am sorry to go on about this but too many people dont see what happens or they dont know the facts.

Cheers
Dave

so.. if I want to run wheels wider than what's legally allowed how do I makes sure I'm covered? do you need an engineers cert.? is there anyway to be fully covered at all, or does it come down to luck on whether you get inspected?

I hate to say it, but maybe it's worth registering the car in ya mum or dad's name and then insuring it with you as a designated and named younger driver. It's perfectly legal and probably cheaper although you'll still have a big excess.

that said, might be worth talking to a solicitor about what Matt said, if it's true then you might be in a better position.

i didnt want to do it (cos of the high cost) but i agree with what dave said.

the companies are in the business of making money

simple.

i am out to get my car insured, then i want to be covered.

simple.

its just an expensive process to get all my mods ticked off by a vicroads approved engineer and make sure im covered. for me though, the expense is worth it.

it will also make my car more desirable and easier to sell with the engineers certificate.

just another additional cost of doing the job properly.....

....... looks like i cant unhook the pipe that goes from my bank account to my car just yet

😉

I think if I was 17 again I might take the risk of no 3rd party property insurance, especially at the rates mentioned. Your greenslip covers passengers and 3rd party injuries (note NOT the at fault driver) which is where there could be massive claims.
3rd party property is really limited to the damage you can do. Chances of hitting a $250k Porsche aren't high (although $30k for a Falcon would still be a worry).
If you have a crash, and you're not at fault, you'll be fine.
If you are at fault, you can pay the repairs, if you can, or I suppose declare bankruptcy. This might hurt the credit record, and will definitely stop you getting a mortgage/car finance until you are discharged, but if I was 17 it might be worth a punt that if the worst happened I would be back on my feet at age 24.
Different story if you have any assets, of course, but I suppose if you had plenty of money you would pay the insurance ;-)

don't risk it, get insured some how. you might just have to pay the money, sad, but if that's the case then do it. going bankrupt due to an accident is not an option.

Best to get insured, cus you may bump bumpers and all drive off happy since there was little or no damage done but they can come back at you 6 or 12 months later with medical issues.

This happened some time ago to my mum, she bumbed some one in a car park - did no real damage. All parties changed names etc and agreed there was no need to make a claim. About 6 months later mum get a letter of demand from the other driver wanting us to pay money for whip lash/ medical and physo expenses etc. Anyway she sent it to her insurer how had a growning pile of letters from other policy holders from the same lady. Anyway I think the insurance company then get stuck into them.

Insurance may cost a s%$t load but so do solictors fees and payouts if they find in there favour......
