What luck for her to be alive.
I mean, what are the chances of surviving a lightning stike even when the bolt hits right on the drivers side. Now that is crazy and "MIRACULOUS"

Actually a car is one of the safest places to be in a lightning storm. Almost no chance of the charge earthing through you!
Electrically speaking, at lightning's higher frequencies, currents are carried mostly on the outside of conducting objects. A thick copper wire or a hollow-wall metal pipe will carry most of the lightning on outer surfaces. This phenomenon is called Skin Effect. The same holds true for lightning when it strikes metal vehicles: the outer surface carries most of the electricity. The persons inside this steel box can be likened to protected by a partial Faraday Cage.

um i have my doubts. even if she was a couple of metres away she probably should be dead (isn't that what happens with lightning? everything else within ~5m is pretty much dead?). if ur that close to lighning, there is no way you think it a tyre blowout. like the whole thing goes BOOM and you have no windscreen and u'd think everything's been fried as far as wiring goes. she should be able to tell the difference. sounds like bs to me... :duh

nah theverybigtallman, Ive been within 15m of a strike a few times, horribly loud but nothing else, often bearely leaves a trace of a mark, dont quite onderstand how electricity brakes glass though?

I was driving behind a car once when it was hit by lightning. I actually saw it (the lightning) bounce off the roof and onto the ground. We both pulled over and there wasn't a mark on the car, his underpants were a different matter as the noise had been deafening.
i remember my old school bus sideswiped a car that got hit by lightning (or the lightning hit just infront of the car, we never worked out which) scared the sh1t out of us thats for sure.

sorry bigtallman... lightning is VERY precise about the path it takes electrically (shortest with least resistance), so you could be standing less than a meter away and the only thing that would happen is that you would be deaf.
that is how she was lucky and nothing happened to her... not bs at all.
if lightning had a 5meter dissipation radius you would not expect formations like these to exist... they are called fulgurites

in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
I have been within a couple of metres to a couple of lightning bolt strikes - and as mentioned it was just a very loud (and quite scary) experience - the first time I thought I had been shot at by a canon or something! :P
In the UK there is a car program called "Top Gear" (I wish they would show it over here - it's a great show), and last year they tested what happens when a car gets hit by lightning. They had to go to a place in Germany where they can produce a (man-made) lightning bolt on demand (1 of only 2 places in the world or something).
Anyway, the presenter sat in the car and they continually hit it with these lightning bolts. The only thing to happen was the all the lights and radio would come on and off. At the end, the presenter was able to start the car as normal and drive away!
From memory, I think the car they tested was a Golf GTI.

Thanks Squizy! Funnily enough I only ordered Foxtel on Monday. The engineer is coming on Tuesday next week to install Foxtel iQ. :thumb
Do you know what channel Top Gear is on? Thanks

airbags would go off from the shockwave too

Trees will explode sometimes because the path of least resistance is through the sap, which boils and blows the tree inside out. Boiling sap, air and a big spark = fireball with built in accererant

Top gear is actually on the BBC news channel.
I think Thursday nights, just look in the guide.
It is only about 4-6 weeks behind England.
Got to be the best car show in the world.
my opinion.
Jezza is a very funny man.
