I have to admit that I was very excited this afternoon to see a copy of the latest edition of VWMA in my local newsagent, that was of course until I read the editor blah blah.
As an owner of a modern VW I find the comments made by the editor to be very offensive. I am very attached to my car thankyou very much and I think that if I parked it in a car park then it would not be confused with any other make. As for boring ???? really ?????.
For a magazine that clearly states on the front cover "Australia's only water & air cooled VW mag" you haven't done a lot to make the owners of watercooled VW's welcome. We cop enough shit without it being put in a VW magazine.
I know that this post is going to cause a bit of an uproar, but I think that it is time that we should get over the whole air vs water debate and what is better.
And if you read this Mr VWMA Editor and I know you lurk here from time to time, then shame on you !!!! and to rectify this horrible horrible error of judgement I think that you should do a 4 page editorial on how gorgeous the new beetle is and how much you love it ! coupled with a 4 page spread featuring as many waterpumpers you can find !

it's called the "editor blah blah" so maybe you should take it as just that... it's a great magazine, and there's always atleast one waterpumper featured in each issue
I think you will find that he was having a go at modern cars in general and not really picking on the new beetle.I dont think water v air was even mentioned.
He is right though, most if not all the new cars I have driven have been truley boring.
I do have a modern car and it is because of my job.
My wife also has a modern car, because of the kids.
But to enjoy DRIVING, my bus wins every time.
Cheers

you know that there is a bad attitude section for slagging off
1961 swb buggy
1960 karmann ghia
1963 Single Cab: "El Concreto"
1963 bent 23 window " Frieda Samba "
1963 Eriba Faun camper " Cara Van daCamp"
2012 Skoda Octavia scout
Get down low and go,go,go
I will have to agree with 57kombi, We have two modern day cars and 1 sbug, I like the comforts of the modern car but still drive the bug when ever I can.

Why is it that because I am saying how offended I am noted as "slagging off"? I am sure if the situation was reversed and someone was saying that "vintage vw's" were boring etc etc then it would cause an uproar !

Well,
this edition of the Magazine was very Good.....
I don't normally read anything about water cooled VWs...
but I did read every page of this edition of VWA magazine.... a few times....
I believe the Editor was talking about My Mitsubishi Lancer when He mentioned small modern lookalike cars....
People say to Me, Do You still own the little white car.....
I'm sure they wouldn't say that if I owned a NEW Beetle or cabriolet....
as neither of those look like a Lancer/Impreza/Civic/Pulsar/ Corolla etc etc....
They are very DIFFERENT..... and We Will and Do take Notice of the new beetle..... when We see one....
as they are 'as rare as' in the Upper Hunter area of NSW....
Rest assured that Your New VW doesn't look anything like a modern lookalike car....
more similar to a very old designed piece of machinery, We all love.... and You know what that is........

I agree the rest of the mag was great, it even featured an article on a sweet little black new bug, but the new car stuff drives me NUTS !
It's like there is some secret society that people who own the waterpumpers will never be "good" enough to be a part of and just because I own a modern car doesn't say that I am not an enthusiast (?spelling) or don't share the same passion as other VW owners
🤘
i just looked at the article & all he is saying is modern tech
has taken the fun out of driving & i agree with that statement
same as a manual & automatic, i have hired cars over the yrs
new & automatic & driven long distance in them a bit like auto pilot
wally
I must admit i don't find any real character in modern cars. I've had a bug for the past 14 years and nothing like it. My mates old mk1 and mk2 escorts had heaps more character than most of the modern cars. They are all too much alike and kinda dull IMHO. Then we got a bay for the mrs 😉 ! Well thats just great. I love it. If i didn't have to drive the 86k's to and from work wouldn't own anything newer than the mrs 76 bay !!!
I don't even like having a run of the mill modern car. Just blending into the traffic!

Hi All,
All valid comments and critical suggestions. When I wrote the editiorial (5 drafts, and some on the forum would argue I should have done one more) I always knew the topic would raise discussion, although I never did mention the phrase water cooled, and never directly made negative comments against specific new Volkswagen cars.
When I am offered a test drive in a new Volkswagen, I thoroughly enjoy it. Their cars are great. Given the choice though, I prefer my Kombi or Beetle. It's also got something to do with the community feeling of the older cars. Today a fellow Kombi driver pulled up along side me on the freeway, waved and smiled and then we cruised together for a few clicks before exiting separate ways, but not before a horn blast and the Kombi wave. As yet no other Golf driver, as an example, has done that while I have been test driving. And no one in Hyundieds ever waves when I am in a rental. There's something special there.
Water cooled VWs will always be a part of this magazine. Do you see them that often as regular features in the UK or US mags? I make sure I have at least two water cooled cars in each issue - it's a conscious decision on my part. Issue#7 has three Golfs - a MkI, a ute, and the new GTi. That makes eight pages. Looks like I'm back in the good books.
All Volkswagen makes and models are a valid part of the hobby, especially in Australia, otherwise I wouldn't include them.
Cheers
Craig
And I don't lurk. I have a restraining order against me doing so. I also frighten myself sneaking around.
fair enough
What about rats dude?
And i have a mate who has a split singlecab with only 27000 original miles, you were asked about doing a story on it and you dont seen interested? And we've seen the peach bug and the drag beetle enough, pleaese no more stories...
Cheers

The split single cab ute has already been entered into the story list. My photographer and I have already discussed this unique ute. At present, I have a three issue waiting list for new stories to go in, that's only the ones I have had time to book in - there's still a pile waiting to be sorted. I receive on average three new articles a week - feature cars, sport, tech, general interest and events. Not too shab shab - has somewhat of a future based on that interest.
And rats. No probs. Asked a couple of rat owners at a Sydney show once but they passed on the opportunity. Pity, though, one was a very untouched original example of a big window semaphore beetle. Send me some pics and info.

I thought this one was better than the others.....
Maybe its just what You can remember seeing in other Aussie VW Magazines.....
It May be just Me....
but then I'd buy it just to see the advertised VW parts....
I like to browse thru the advertised parts in UK & US & Brazil too.....
AS soon as I find the account Info I will subscribe to it too....
via netbanking ... otherwise its back to the Newsagent....

That is the rat I saw. Wonder who I was talking to then? Can you please email these same photographs and contact details to
editor@vwma.net.au.
Cheers
you have email!
oh and it has original crank handle and photo of the original owner! the log book is in an army prescription book, heaps of rego papers and receipts. I have kept the log book going and only done a couple of thousand miles since i've had it. I change oil regulary and drive it on short trips often. I live north NSW so it get's driven into town now and then 17 kms each way 100km zone.. good short runs. I have penetrolled the underneath of the whole bug, fish oiled, lanolined the whole car every month, it WILL NOT RUST! and hasn't since i got it. Sat in Shed for 20 years. Have the quarter window from the last rego sticker. Surface rust is from condensation only!
...good one Tim
hehe thanks jenz
not as shiney as yours though! at opposite ends of the scale hey?
hi mscabrio.....you seem to have some issues between air v water! this is not a new issue...your justified to voice it.. its not negative..its a positive..because you are looking @ this site..that has already closed the divide.
Do I presume you are a miss cabrio?? and even go out on a limb to guess it may be your first vw..??which you are very proud of..so proud that you follow these forums..anyhow I think we all know where you coming from..most air drivers also have a reliable, economical and safe modern vehicle. You have both in one..great
I have 4 vw`s @ present 3 air, one water..also a toyota and God forbid Hyundai trajet.
Family comes first..it replaced a beetle and I sleep better @ nights for it.
I find myself waving to other vw`s in my toyota..sometimes they wvae back if they see..its a habit..quite often I wave to late model vw`s in my split and they hav`nt even seen it coming..the only place you are bound to get a wave is travelling North of the Tropic of Capricorn on the west coast..thats when you know your alive..
i recon Craig (editor) is doing a fantastic job..help him out for a few days as he approaches print time and see what he is up against..he needs our support..I`ll give you a wave if your ever in the west..k
A bit of savagery here - Please be patient with Craig (VWMA Editor) it seems everyone wants their ride in the magazine but it takes time - trust me I know. If Craig as taekn your details and said he'll be in contat then he will be - I've been there with him.
The best part is the wait and then the surprise of being told it's going to be in the next edition - you get wrapped with this contact and anxious for the photo shoot and then get on edge waiting for the best VW Mag to come out with you and your rides story in it.
Good on you Craig as you are doing a great job and evidently some people do not read things properly or misunderstand your editorial.
Let me out, When I call my name
IGOR is ALIVE !!!! 😎

I think people are missing the point, the air v water was never mentioned in the article,
I think someone is just a bit over sensitive.
