Was wondering if anyone can help out....
I just bought a 71 kombi, came with one 1600 twin port in it and another one spare....
The guy who I bought it off said he wasnt sure about the history of the engines. The one in it runs, but really rough. He said it was down on one side..... I am guessing the head on one side is buggered but how can I tell if its a more serious problem??
Also /.... the other block I have.... how can I tell if it is in good condition.... do I have to get it running?? or can I tell another way. it has no carb etc etc./....
Basically I want to try and get one good one out the two... whats the best way to go about this??
Thanks for your help.... maybe I should just rebuild one from scratch??

the first thing to do is take the fan belt off and push/pull on the bottom pulley. ie check for endplay
Anymore than 4 thou and sh is on the way out.
If you can "see" movement she is definitelt on the way out.
On the one that is running rough - do a tune. Valves especially.
Then try and beg borrow or steal a vcompression tester and do a test.
Leak down tests are better but dont worry about that now.
If there is bugger all endplay and compression is within 5lb per pot and at least over 100 lbs it is healthy-ish.
Endplay is fixrd by a line bore, crank grind, thrust cut and new bearings
Compression by head reco and maybe case work (studs etc)
Futue te ipsum!!!
Thanks guys .... anyone else.....

Hi!
Many people will tell you that the engine is sick jsut because they don't know how to fix it.
Do a general tune-up first - replace the normal consumables (unless they are obviously brand new) - consumables = spark plugs, points, cap, rotor button, oil, filters (oil (if fitted), and fuel), and even the fuel lines if they are getting a little hard. It may even be worth replacing the ignition leads too (use copper core leads with the correct rubber plug on the end that seals up the hole in the tin where the spark plug is...)
Adjust everything - even a worn engine can be made to run smoothly in many cases. Adjust the points (you will have to do this when you replace them anyway), the valve clearances, the ignition timing, and the mixture...
...if it's still not running smooth then listen for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold (sounds like a hiss - if it is audible at all), even exhaust leaks can make an engine sound rough....if all this fails start to look for low compression (compression test as mentioned by Bizarre above)....
Good luck - and let us know how it all goes - always interested to find out what causes an engine to run poorly.

PS: I used to have a 1200 that burnt more oil than fuel (well - almost) in my '63 Bug. It ran smoothly most of the time - the exception being when it fouled up a spark plug when sitting in traffic - a quick blast at high revs would usually clear the plug and everything would be happy again until the traffic stopped.... Used to stop at traffic lights and dissapear in a cloud of smoke 😀 The look on the other drivers faces was classic :duh
This engine used around 2 liters of oil to cover the 15km journey to work - then I'd re-fill it and drive it home - cost me a fortune to keep it running!
40hp, 6V and ...er... slowly making improvements

hey
When i bought a bus it came with a spare engine, with no carbs. We stripped it down and found that one of the pistons had a valve. This is pretty bad, anyways we cleaned the engine up and all is good besides one piston, valve and head. The engine in the car had a cracked valve, we rebuilt it, split the case checked bearing and everything but it had been rebuilt recently so they were all fine, got heads cleaned up and a new valve for $500. Engine is running perfect now, just gotta swap over oil coolers because the one in the bus is leaking. So i guess wat im sayin is if you got 2 engine you can almost be garuenteed a running engine by the end of it. Do a compression test, especially check compression on the #3 cylinder coz it runs hotter tends to be the culprit. This will tell you if you gotta rebuild it or not. If all cylinders are OK then all you gotta do it tune her up!
