Just make sure they are marked in the direction they rotated on the previous car.
Reversing belted radials can make them come apart.
Anyone know any good s/h tyre places in Geelong/melbs?

Does that mean that you shouldnt rotate tyres?
do the old 165x15 tyres have direction then?
Shows how long it is since I bought tyres ;-)

I have heard that, but I think it could be one for the Myth Busters to try!
I have never seen a tyre come apart.

Better to get new. Tyres go off - the rubber goes hard and they dont grip too well. Also you dont know where they have been or who used them or where they come from. New tyres in that size aren't all that expensive either.

Hi
I have an L bug Im wrecking with some good 165 x 15s on it. You could have them for $10.00 each with 4 stud rims. I just need them on it for another week so that I can keep the car mobile.

I wouldn't touch second hand tyres with a 10 foot pole.
Some cheap tyres have a steel belt as wide as the tyre that comes around and the end overlaps the start creating an edge. These tyre should be rotated in a direction that would tighten the roll rather than unwrap it. Imagine toilet paper or a roll of fabric. Which way would you roll it to tighten it?
The tyre side wall should say which direction it should rotate.
Better quality tyres have a continuous roll which is like wire on a winch or string rolled on a spindle and the direction is not as important.
Some cheap tyres don't even have steel belts.
Check the inside of any second hand tyres before you check the outside. Look for cracking and discolouration. This may indicate the tyre has been run flat and either damaged or overheated.
Never drive on a tyre with a bulge. This indicates a broken belt or bead and your dicing with death.
Don't use tyres more than 10 years old.
Avoid using tyres more than 5 years old.
All tyres have date codes and a good tyre dealer will be able to interpret them.
Tyres should be stored in a cool dry place out of sun light.
Don't use grey import tyres designed for roads in other countries. The first belt is laid depending on the side of the road you drive on. So there are left hand drive and right hand drive tyres.
Good luck.
