Hey everyone
I bought a 1969 beetle last night with a 1500 motor. It hadn’t been started in about a year. So this morning I had started it and every time it started up it would die unless I pumped the pedal. Eventually after playing with the choke it idled it was quite smoky. It ran for about 45 minuets and then all of a sudden it broke down and wouldn’t start. I then looked at the carby and found an oil leek in one spot and a fuel leek in another. Also the manifold at the top was very cold and was dripping with water. I have no idea what’s going on.
Would anyone be able to tell me why this is happening as other beetles I have had have never done this before.

Change the fuel
Change the Fuel filter
and clean the plugs
after you have done this and it still doesn't run get a mechanic to have a look. :thumb
Manifold dripping with water and cold means you have carb icing (not enough heat in your intake manifold due to blocked or restricted preheater pipe) if you have one:thumb
check the points

how can i fix it. its only when it runs for a while

you could get another inlet manifold (check that you can blow through the preheat pipe easily), or quick fix=get some copper pipe ann run it from the cooling fins (under tinwear) and point the other ends at the base of the carby.
as said before change points, filter, plugs, any worn fuel lines, gaskets if they are leaking, and see how you go
cheers ill give it a shot in the morning. but why will it only stay running if i pump the pedel its really anoying lol.

could be the idle solenoid or the inlet manifold is leaking or the carby is loose or old fuel or blocked up jets 🙁

i reckon it could just be the fuel filter is full of shit. Cost $5 and you can fix it yourself in 2 minutes..

nah its brand new filter. new fuel and i just cleaned the sparkplugs

if you have replaced the fuel and filter and cleaned the lines, I would be thinking POd's ideas are looking good...........
run some metho in the fuel tank as well

It is a true idea, cause fuel and water don't mix. but fuel and metho do, as well as water and metho do. so it makes the fuel and water mix............get it.
as for is it a good idea...? well I don't think so , but many people think it is.
btw you only use a little something like 1/2 a cup or so.........

heheh ok yer i cleaned the spark plugs ive put little metho in and ive changed the oil. but im still getting carb ice so i think im just gonna get it a new carbie

I have no idea if you are experiencing carb icing or not BUT if you are replacing the carb wont help,its not his fault HE DID IT > mr.intake manifold !!!! anyway check this out

If you are getting manifold freezing (sounds like it) you can get a 12volt electric heating element (wire) that wraps around the manifold pipe just below the carbie. You wire it to the coil positive wire so when the engine is running wire heats up and stops the freezing.
I have the same problem with the 1600 in my old 57 oval. Worked a treat.
I bought this as a kit from a company in melb called The VW Performance Center. They should still have them available.
cheers lug nuts ive fixed it. i have unblokeed the manifold it was packed was hard to get the wire through i hadto heat the end of it up. i have also changed the oil and put meth in the fuel its running better than befor.
but for the car to idol i havto hold the choke to keep it at a high rev but i think the spring has broken. i also diped the sparkpluges into metho and lit them on fire it cleaned the crap of them. its not missfireing anymore. runs good for a car that hasnt been started in years.
