I tried to replace My original fuel filler hose without success.. Couldn't find one anywhere.....

But it turned out the small bent hose was the culprit....
I hapened to touch the bent hose after adding fuel.... and it was wet to touch.... but didn't leak....

So here is how I used straight Heavy duty auto hose to stop that smell.....

I reused the joiner that was already in the original hose, and did away with the bent hose....

No More Fuel smell!!!

top pic- original 2 hoses - Lower pic - New black fuel/oil auto hose..... 320mm of new hose is needed ....
You will have to cut the joiner tee piece out of the hose without cutting the tee piece...

the filler is the thickone though isnt it lee? i get the smell.. and i thought it was from the thick hose from hole in side of car > tank itself.. does this mean the over flow hose is the culprit?

I get fuel smell if i go around a left hand corner at a decent speed..

I think it has something to do with the fuel filler pipe... this is on a late type 3..

So it could be the overflow pipe huh Lee? What - perished inside or something like that, and just needs renewing?

I might give that a go. Good tip.

Thanks Lee. Is the smell actually coming from the hose itself? What did you use for the main filler pipe? Or is all that smell coming from the overflow pipe?

I just naturally thought it was the large hose causing the fumes...
but I found that the bent hose was actually wet with fuel if You touched it.....after adding fuel to the tank..
it was cracked.... although fuel never leaked out of it....
but the very strong petrol fumes did... .....

So it seems that this hose will be in a similar condition in most VWs of this age.... I knew finding a bent hose of that size would be virtually impossible to find.....

Its great now the petrol fumes have all disappeared -----

I will have to check this out. Having to wind the windows down for the occasional burst of fuel vapour on a chilling night isnt great.

My 1959 Beetle smells of fuel. The rubber seal under the filler cap is perished, so petrol slops out of the tank when cornering. I'll replace the rubber soon....

We had the problem as well. What we did was buy some hose for the main fuel filler and we actually bought new bent hoses from CIP1 in the states. Ours doesn't smell anymore either. WooHoo.

We also got a new fuel guage sender and had the exciter? checked and now the fuel gauge is ACCURATE too. WOW.
