As i'm off on a road trip in my kombi, what are the essentials in spares that i should have on board? And must have tools, spanners etc?
I'd rather be safe than sorry...

clutch cable
accelerator cable
fencing wire
electrical wire
duct tape
tyre weld or similar
fuel filter
oil filter
distributor
head
2xpots and pistons
fuel hose
vacuum hose
10 second superglue
contact adhesive
black and/or blue silicon
jerry can
EDIT:
electrical switch
coil
condenser
spark plug leads
tyre patch kit with big patches
hose clamps

Tools:
Big shifter
vice grips
big and small flatheads and philips head screwdrivers
socket set with 15mm socket (not in all sets for some reason).
8mm multihex bit
set of allens
sharp blade
pliers
scissors
pry bar
hammer
jack
WD-40
aerostart
a couple of different sized blocks of wood

That should do it. I usually have 2 toolboxes and half a car worth of parts. I've needed it. A lot of kms, a lot of failures.

Fire extinguisher! Take one or burn! And keep it in an easy-to grab place: mine is mounted on the wall immediately behind the driver's seat so I can grab it as I leap out.

All the stuff for changing/repairing punctured wheels: jack, brace, spare, tyre-weld, 12v compressor, something to get the hubcaps off with (an opened and bent coat-hanger makes a simple two-hook tool for this).

Tow rope (so you can help others 😉 )

Spare fan belt, and the spanners to change it

Stuff for repairing wiring: 5m roll of wire (rated at least 10A), spare spade fittings (both male and female), crimpers (or pliers), insulation tape

Spare fuses

Gaffa tape! You always find a use for gaffa tape on a long trip!

Spare oil, and a funnel (I use a cut-off 2L coke bottle) so you can pour it without spilling.

WD40

A selection of spanners, and one of those screwdrivers with a selection of changeable hex bits.

Spare jerry can of fresh fuel: You will find yourself in a situation where you thought you had enough in the main tank to get to the next town but then something started running rough and you start using fuel faster than you expected... that's when you'll be glad you brought the jerry can!

A couple of rags for wiping oil & hands.

Who actually takes all that stuff????

I cant believe anyone would take enough spares to pretty much do a complete rebuild. I wouldnt... and I have had to do it! If I were sensible I would take enough for any electrical gremlin. I've made some pretty impressive improvisations with electrics huh jay! clutch and accelerator cables could be nice n handy as can a fuel pump, a petrol cap and a windscreen. Take every tool you own. Thats about all. In reality I take just the original death trap jack and a spare tyre.

All you need to remember is that when you're pulling 3 tonne and the engine starts sputtering, and you keep going, and you burn a hole in a head, and you keep going, and you torch the other head, and you keep going (must make valla!) you're in for a shit weekend. If something happens, theres always kmart auto or something for tools. anyone will have a set of plugs and points for a kombi (or something that will improvise) you can always use your headlight wiring as an ignition, dont drive no steenking type 1 engine so can do plenty of miles without a belt... Apart from my last nambucca any problems I have had have made for very memorable memories. All part of the fun.

aeroguard! flies n mossies love that stuff. so you spray on more, more flies come, you spray on more.... someone is making a fortune selling fly pheromones.
at least thats my cynical opinion 🙂
Leave aeroguard at home and take someone smellier than you :P

My last drive to melbourne was interesting.
Filled up with fuel and left cap on the roof. Remembered 20 minutes later, drove back, found cap nice n flat on the road. Got one of those useless one size fits all things. drove away and 1 hour later had a wire that I hadnt located sensibly melt through, shorting out the ignition switch, much smoke, couldnt switch ignition off cos of melting... eventually pulled plug from switch. Hotwired car and drove off again. Came to a massive cattle muster and had to wait half hour. Drove on, only to break windscreen, drive back to wagga without screen, payed for after hours service. drove on to albury when it got dark, realised that the short had also burnt out lighting switch. Hot wired the lights, had KFC as they were about to close... got to melbourne 16 hours later, for a 9 hour drive. Have to admit that I did lose the plot when the windscreen shattered but other than that, it was all good. Will never forget that trip. Awesome.

losing kombi petrol caps is a common thing. If you lose one, every time you stop for fuel, make up a story that you left it at that servo a week ago. They will have a box of lost caps and one of them will be for a kombi 🙂

If you've only recently acquired the kombi, the best thing is to do a bit of preventative maintenance. Go over it with a fine tooth comb looking for things that need doing. This could save you a lot of grief on your trip. 😉

Things to look for/do incl.:

- anything made from rubber. Over time it perishes and can leave you stranded or on fire or both. Important things to check incl. brake hoses, fuel hoses and the steering coupler (base of the steering column).
- brake condition/performance
- cv joints. Are the boots in decent condition (rubber again). I pulled mine apart and found that the wrong grease had been used in one - poured out like custard!
- replace all the ignition bits unless you know for certain that they are new
- check gearbox/steering box oil levels (I assume that you already regularly check the engine oil)
- lights, particularly the headlights. I didn't discover mine were pointing at the ground on high beam until on a trip!
- loose/missing nuts and bolts. It's amazing how many fall off over the years!
- gear linkage. There are a number of parts that can come loose, fall off, break and leave you suddenly without all the gears.

Im with you 100% stuff the tools they only take up valuble drink storing room i never take spares cause if you got them your car knows it and craps itself i go to fraser for a week and do 100+ on inland tracks + 3rd gear drifts around the top of the island and i dont even have a spare tyre my tool box includes botle top opener duct tape and cable tie's i do all my work before it gets a chance to break down
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't

haha, yeah i reckon they have have a mind of their own too! All maintenance up to date, gone over it a few times, basic spares tucked away, fingers crossed for a good run up there. Leaving at 1:00am Sunday morning, so some nice cold air intake for prolly 1/2 the trip, so i shouldnt have any probs with temp, and plenty of cd's and nibblies to keep me awake.
BRING IT ON!
