Hi I own a 72 Type Fastback and recently have picked up some Mags 14" x 7". I really need to know how wide can I go with them. Will 185 be too wide.

7" should be able to take up to 225 I would say. I have 205s on 6"

It depends. Is your car lowered? What profile tyres were you thinking? In order to keep the same diameter/wheel circumference (sp?) you will need to go 205-70, that is because you are going from a stock 15" rim to a 14" rim. check this site out:

If your car is not lowered you might get away with it. However, the offset of the wheels have a lot to do with it as well. More than likely the offset of the wheels you bought are beetle offset, which means that your wheel may stick out more than the original wheels.

With the fasty you will have to pay more attention to the tyres scrubbing at the back of the wheelwell, in front of the pedals, more than rubbing the guards. My old fasty rubbed with a load in the boot, even though it was running stock wheels with 165's...

Taller tyres will rub more, as will wider tyres, unless you reduce the other dimension accordingly. ie go taller but narrower (yeah right!) or wider but smaller O.D.
