Cruises have to me always been part of dubbing , just like the shows etc. Great chance to get out and meet up with others , see their cars , show yours off abit etc etc. Seems alot of others feel the same way.

We have heaps of folks here with VW's and many are rego'd and running though very few actually attend. I'm curious of why folk dont bother. I realise that some are working , some have kids to worry about etc but there must be more to it than that.

Could it be the timing i.e Sundays , locations to boring , too far away , already in other clubs??????

I suppose to sort a problem you need to fully understand it so any comments would help. I'd love to see alot more cruises , see some new cars and catch up with folk.

Okay AVD , whats the answer to getting better numbers of vw's showing up at cruises?

Cheers Dan:thumb

I agree with you. I love cruises. It is stacks of fun to drive in a convey of cool cars ! I guess that people have other things on so that they can't make it.

I have no idea Danny.

Our Hunter cruise we had planned for 6-8 weeks beforehand....and whilst F3DK and DNVK is still in their infancy, the numbers where lower than I though - especially from my end.

The location and the distance was good for us, yet only 1 person game up from Sydney - good on ya Glenn.

Brendan and I had a bit of a chat about it - and we're going to try and organise something on the Central Coast every 4 weeks - not necessarily a big cruise, just a 60 km loop around the coast that ends up with Fish and Chips somewhere for lunch. Simple, and easy to plan, doesn't take a full day, and people can still get somewhere else in the afternoon if they want to.

I think there are a number of answers, depending on who you're talking to. I just can't put my finger on it at this point.

to aquire a good number but such is life
last thursday i went to coffs to get supplies 60k round trip
anyway leaving coffs there was a new beetle up ahead so
i sat on his tail for 25klms probable thought i was an idiot
but hey two vw's in a line who cares i made my own convoy.😎

p.s. sas brought this up about old bar in october long weekend & breaking a kombi world record, its halve way
between syd & bris with old cars, boats & planes on display

It's funny because both myself and Beerboy had been talking about this while at the VW Nats drag racing when we noted how few VWs were in the car park. It didn't feel anything liek a VW day at all. Coming from Ireland and Beerboy from England we all come out for a cruise no matter what the weather. You guys don't realise how lucky you are to have mostly dry days and good roads to go cruising. I can't understand why there is such a low turnout. As soon as I get a bug on the road I'll be out as often as I can!
As a 'new boy' to the Aussie VW scene I am curious to know whether the turnout was always low or is this a recent thing?

I organised a twilight cruise event in Sydney in Jan this year. Lots of people said they'd be interested. Then at the last minute, lots bombed. So on the night, ONE, I repeat, ONE other car turned up. Now we had a nice time, but it would have been heaps nicer had we had even two or three more cars.

I hate to say it, but I think most people just can't be bothered. I reckon it's a combination between aussie apathy and the current younger generations lack of commitment to anything in particular. It's always 'sorry, I got a better offer'.

Now that's fine, but if the cruise I tried to organise had gone well, I might have been encouraged to try and start a Club of sorts (probably buggy), or to join a club, but now, well why should I bother, no one else seems to. You know what they say guys, you gotta be in it to win it. So if you want people to run stuff you have to support it.

Whoever said "if you build it, they will come" was wrong. It's more like "if you build it, they get a better offer at the last minute and drop out."

Now I've had my rant, can I just say, people, if you are gonna run something, make it on a Saturday. I'd love to come out to anything, but sundays are just bad news, and everything seems to be on a Sunday now. I work for a church on sundays and in between services my family needs me, so make it a Saturday and I'll do my darnedest to show up.

Coopgirl and I arranged a few cruises and even a weekender. Had reasonable turn outs at them.

It is discouraging when no one shows but if you get one, then next time you'll probably get three and so on.

You need to be judicious in regard to date and time and a reason to come - other than just the pleasure of cruising.

Sundays are popular cause it's often the only day that people don't work! Saturday nights, unless it's to the drive in people generally want a bit more let loose...

Wouldn't have mentioned the sunday thing except Danny did. But anyway, that's how it is for me, that's all. Surely friday nights would be just as good?

Our Klub organises outings, which we cruise to. When Mrs M started Klub VW Bayside she was wisely told to organise things you want to do. That way if no one turns up, you will still have fun. This has worked well to date. Sometimes we have heaps show up and other times it is the 4 regular cars..........we have fun anyway.

You cannot make people do things, life as we knew it as children has changed........in most families both the parents work (some 7 days a week), my mother was at home and dad was home by 5, kids are in daycare and school(childcare centres were few and far between when I was small), therefore parents use weekends as 'catch up time' with the kids and their families.

Trying to balance this 'modern' life is a pain in the ass...............so things have to give. Luckily for me, both of my kids are off my hands and in great jobs, so I can please myself and go to most things.

Hiya! It was good to meet some of you on Sunday - I thought it was a good turnout. I have to admit, Sunday was the firts time I have been on a car club run for more than a decade... it was a good opportunity to blow the cobwebs (140km/h Mooney Mooney bridge :thumb) out of my 'new' Super Beetle.

On attendance at cruises... it's difficult to find one 'reason' why people don't turn up. I have been in Sydney-based VW clubs before, and have cruised with the Torana Club in teh past too. On Sunday, I had a choice of a) work; b) go to the VW cruise to the Hunter c) go to a VW BBQ in Sydney; d) go on a HSV Owners Club cruise or 4) either attend or watch the V8 Supercars.

You kinda need to ask a bigger commitment from people. The biggest cruise of the year for the Torana Club was a full weekend - Friday night to Sunday arvo to the South Coast or Bathurst etc. People took time off from work to attend. It's too easy for people to say 'ahh stuff it' at the last minute for a one-day cruise...

I know we all live busy lives, i work 6 days a week and a full w'end a month however i make time as i love getting out.
Being from the uk i feel that i may be judging it against what it was like there. Regardless of rain , grey skies etc heaps of folk would show and camp overnight and be bothered to go to cruises and shows. In cars without heating and shitty tents in sub zero temps. Been there , dont that. As was said before we dont know how lucky we are here.
Just wish we had the same kind of passion for the social side and love of slammed vw's.
Guys wait for my lotto numbers to come up and we are laughing. Worlds first vw diner/workshop/parts shop/indoor drag strip! Okay the diner might be stretching it but...

More comments ............

mainly family commitments

Yep - work bloody hard 5 days
I have 3 kids with varied interests themselves
My father i try to spend a day a month with (he comes on drives with me Bulli show and a drive to Beckers for some parts)
Saturday is written off with soccer (kids and me play)
I have an active wife that has interests.
I have an interest in tinkering in VWs as well as driving them
I have other friends
I have a house to fix, extend and maintain

I guess for me its
1 family
2 tinkering with VW's (tuning fixing cleaning etc)
3 other friends and family

I guess it really dont leave time for cruises

Yeah - sad, but that is how my life is put together

As an early member of Flat Four Sydney, I have been enjoying great VW cruises since 1984.
Since moving to the Sunshine Coast I'm pleased to see that VW cruising is alive and well in Northern NSW & Qld.

There are some great cruises coming up including:

'Karmann Kruize '05'
Celebrating the 50 years for the KG
organised by the Australian Karmann Ghia Association
Sunday 17 July

and

'Run to the Sun' - Kombi Club Run
Kombi Club in conjunction with Klub VW,
Saturday 30th July - Sunday 31st July 2005

See you there!

I've been thinking on this one a little more, and whilst I can see the perspective of peoples busy weekend lives (sport, work, family etc - not necessarily in that order), do people feel that there is a fear of coming on another clubs cruise - because there should be any fear at all.

Our Hunter cruise was a joint effort between DNVK and F3DK, and was an open invitation to all. I know a few people from here not in F3DK, and understand their reasons - but was wondering if there was a general feeling of being left out, and trying to fit in on the day?

I remember the first Krispy Kreme cruise, where we had 7 cars, and I reckon 4-5 of them hadn't met before. Was good just getting together, without a club, and just doing something and cruising somewhere.

Oh well....the next F3DK cruise will be on in about 4 weeks time. A 60km circuit of the Central Coast. I'll post something later in the week.....lets see the interest.....

mscabrio and i can vouch for that.... was great to come up to terrigal and meet people who we only know from the forum and then cruise up to the Euro day... we were made very welcome by all who we met.

As for attendance... with such high numbers of people it gets harder to satisfy all of the people... some prefer friday nights... others saturdays... others sundays... some want half days... some want all days... whole weekends etc etc etc... so i think what the organisers need to do is just put it out there with enough notice so people cant say they didn't know about it. Then if they really wanna attend they will do a shuffle of their personal life (if they can obviously) and then make the effort to attend...
Personally i love cruises... its great to all congregate somewhere for a chat with fellow vdubbers as there are always people i have not met before and new vdubs to see.

HRM and I cruise on our own to Red's Roadside Dinner (Pioneer Tavern, Northern Road, Penrith) just about every Friday night. We have suggested the idea to others and everyone was keen but never got off their butts to come.
I've suggested another cruise to Krispy Kreme's but again, everyone thinks it's a good idea but never show up.

I know what it's like with work and family..... Our babies are 8 months and 19 months and they aren't the most accomodating children yet we still manage to get out there.

I love organising events and stuff but lack of interest is disheartening.

i think there is too much other stuff to do in aussieland for people to really care to rock up, also alot of the the traditional clubs are fairly nerdy so that makes for great conversations.

i mentioned once before in another post its the distance as well
but i have marked on the calender for this year
1 byron breeze =600klms round trip
2 run to the sun =1000klms round trip
3 sawtell =80klms round trip (thankfully short)
4 old bar =400klms round trip
so far i will make the utmost effort to go to these events with two kids
soccer on saturdays a 7 day shop & newsagency kombi's being restored
renovations in the planning stage sewerage finally going on in our little
village, for 5 years we have been in this shop & we need to get breaks
even if it cost a lot (wages) before we even start but hey modern life
is too fast you have to put the breaks on every now & again & treat
yourself to something you enjoy or you will became a dreaded "prune".
