Hello all,
I bought a beetle last night and attepmted to register it without taking it to the transport department.. Unfortunately the numbers werent found so i had to take it to them for them to inspect it!!! Well, thats when i got interesting..
Found the engine number ok, then we get to the compliance plate ... hmm 3 things wrong
1. wrong year, road worthy said 74 and advertised as 74 but plate clearly states 71'
2. wrong chassis number, almost correct but one too many numbers
3. wrong colour, green is very different to cream!!! (but could possibly sound similar on the phone :duh)
so the dude who did the road worthy for the man i bought it from is being reported and he will be fined!!! The seller also put the road worthy in my name (dont know if that will make any difference) I am wondering if the beetle was even looked at!!!
Seems very suss to me!!!

There is a LOT of dodgey people out there !!!!
So your car is 3 years older than you thought ? I guess in VW's terms that makes it cooler ????? If it was a modern car you would be spewing !!!!
🤘
Just some friendly advise......GET SOMEONE ELSE TO CHECK THE CAR OVER. If they can't get that basic info right would you trust them with anything else???(brakes etc??):duh:duh

Got my beetle passed for rego only to find out weeks later that i had no brake lights due to some rooting around I had done with the electrics beforehand.

I have a similar story when I bought my first VW... was a little young but very dumb.
Saw an ad in the paper for a notch and drove to western sydney to check it out. Looked OK to me. Didnt take it for a drive cos it had a pink slip roadworthy and it was parked in with heaps of other cars. So went and got the money, might have been $800. Went back and signed the papers handed over the money and went to drive away. Problems arose instantaneaously. Damn thing was hard to keep in a straight line. Took it back but they refused to give money back. Drove home and handed it to wayne penrose who found 2 pages of defects. Went to consumer affairs, even they had trouble talking to the guy. Had to take a day off work to attend mediation, they gave my money back if I towed it back. Which I did. Saga probably cost me $400. Figure thats cheap compared to some stories.
I then ended up buying the original helbus kombi, which was yet another story, the motor in that went down hill very quickly. An interesting smoke machine it was, as dave becker will be able to attest (aaah the old volksdays were such fun). Didnt really matter because I was in love with it and cos a hottie 2 litre was on the wishlist anyway, just happened faster than intended.
Always get a seasoned VW campaigner to assist with your purchase inspections.

colour shouldnt matter, date is issue, but realistically the chassis number isnt that extreme, my bus had 2 numbers around the wrong way, i explained how they had to be the other way (otherwise the model code wouldnt have existed) and they didnt have a problem with it, also found that it had previously registered with a mstake in the engine number as well! maybe there is a lot of dyslexic mechanics out there, would definitely be worth getting it checked over all the same.
Reimagined/Recycled/Upcycled Cool
hehe yeah he could be dyslexic!! but the even owner didnt even know the proper year of the car and he rebuilt it!! i dont know, just seemed abit weird to me!! the transport department wasnt very impressed!! but she seems to go good, i had to fix the bung (? circle piece) on the carby this morning, luckily i found it on the road, and had to replace the garden hose that was being used for the air/fumes pipe (owner said he was going to fix it, i picked it up at night and didnt check)... but anyways i learnt a few things so that ok

i went for a roadworthy last week and apart from the usuals to fix...elect and stuff......they want me to put the head liner back in........can u believe it?.....and the heater has to work?!!! how is that a roadworthy issue, and its not so the mechanics can make $$ because i know them and they wanted me to do the fiddley stuff, the fines have lots of rw guys scared... we`ll see how it goes on friday at the transport dept.
might tape it up.
The heater has to work!!! thats abit over the top.. got the road worthy on my kombi last week to sell it and my heater definately wasnt working!!

Hi
Colour is recorded in NSW and car must be inspected for a colour change.
Steve
The heater has to work because it powers the windscreen demisters, and thats a RWC requirement..
.
If they wanna get nasty they can knock your car for having seatcovers fitted....you would be suprised what wouldn't do through and fail if it was all done "by the book". I:vader

I fitted a windscreen to a friend's Corona on a Saturday and on the Monday when she took it for a roadworthy, the mechanic said it needed a new windscreen. Her dad saw red and told the guy to shove it as the screen was only two days old.
The mechanic looked at the screen again and rubbed off a speck of dust and said "Oh, I thought that was a chip!"

Demister!!!! this is my fourth Kombi....they have Demisters?? "who knew"
😉
Demister??
My engineer said ya don't need heated air, ya just need air.
I haven't got the heat exchangers any more, so I fitted a kombi ventilation fan up beside the gearbox to blow filtered air up the heater channels.
Air, but not necessarily heated.

It is common practise for people to get RWC done in the buyers name so that they don't appear on the system as selling more than a few cars a year. It is usually done by people who are opperating as traders when they are not registered or don't want to declare it.
You can bet the guy who did the RWC was a mate of the guy who"rebuilt" it . I would be getting an inspection done by someone else as while you have them on the back foot you want to make sure you got what you pay for.
As far as the numbers and colours go that will cost the guy at least $250 a mistake plus a conduct fine if it is shown that he didn't inspect the car.
More and more inspectors will NO LONGER do RWC for cars that are being sold or more to the point will give them a very hard inspection as they don't want the car to be sold with their RWC.
RWC in QLD cost like $52.40 and this is a set fee, at $66 - $88 an hour which is what most mechanics charge the system is saying you can put car on hoist and check everything out and put it back down and write up RWC in under an hour.... yep you can see why people do qucikies when their mates tell them it is all good.
On the heater thing ... cars must have a working demmister which is either tested to demist windscreen in certain temp and time or have the system as it came from the factory which means heated.

Why copy when you can own an original ?

What stops you taking to have your own roadworthy done before you buy it. Will this not then cost the 50 bucks and show up what the inspector thinks is wrong. Or am I missing the point again

That would work, providing the seller is willing to let the car go for an hour while that all happens. My experiences years ago when I need professional advice was that they wouldnt. Both private and car yard sales generally wouldnt let you do it.

My heater works but have no idea how to get it onto the screen !
I am sure my road worthy was a little dodgy but nothing that would cause an accident
retractable seat belts are also an issue. Had dramas with my 74 kombi, even though I used all the original kombi brackets from a 78 model. Didnt come with retractable, different number on compliance plate, needs engineered. At least that is what I was told. Instead they passed it when I put 1/4" steel brackets and not only bolted them to the original mounts, but also welded a plate on the bulkhead and bolted through that as well. The seat belt mounts were the strongest bit of the whole vehicle. Since then I've gone back to original brackets. Theres lots of issues that are pedantic, but I suppose there are some people without common sense and and might just bolt a seat belt to a non reinforced bit of metal, and we all have to go through the same checks for that reason.
I'm guessing that this car is/was a 71 model body that has been put onto a 74 floorpan or vice versa. Once the brain dead at the transport department can get their heads around the fact you can actually lift the body off a vw and that both numbers arent stolen, then all will be fine.

a private seller really should have no objection if you are willing to pay for it. what have they got to hide.
I am a little green on this coming from the UK, but I have bought cars with MOT's and they should never have had them.
I don't think MOT are worth the paper they are written on and I would take them as being safe or to add value to the car. The value of the car is as it stands not what it was like when the MOT was got even if that was days ago.
I used to change solenoid doors for normal ones for the MOT as it made things easier ;-)

It seems abit sus but the mistakes are also easy enough to make.
I took the last (non-vw) car that I bought to a workshop that I hold in very high regard before sealing the deal, turned out a good move too since it needed all the suspension bushings, engine mounts, balljoints, brake pads, two shockers, some seals, gaskets, etc, etc, etc... doing which gave me some killer bargaining leverage when I went back with the report. The asking price immediately dropped by over half but the owner was then determined to sell the car to me since he knew I was going to get the work done and therefore the car was in good hands.
Getting your own pre-sale inspection for an immediate daily driver definately seems the way to go imho.
Hope it all works out okay for you though.
Thanks cam..
Yeah beerboy i could have had my own inspection done .. but for one it was 2 hours away from me so alittle hard to organise, and dont know if owner would have let me, plus it wasnt registered to drive anywhere.. two, im a girl who doesnt know that much about buying and selling cars so i put the trust in the person who is doing the road worthy to do a semi ok job!!
From the feedback doesnt seem like that big a deal, just seemed alittle weird to me! I know road worthy doesnt guarantee that the car is perfect, but i still put semi-trust in ensuring that nothing is majorly wrong, so for them to get 3 details wrong when they were clearly marked on the car and the colour is clearly there just makes me doubt, thats all!!

yeah thats the problem with this country it is just so damn huge. In the Uk people would probably consider a 2 hour drive a once in a lifetime trip ;-) ok so thats probably a bit OTT but I doubt that many would drive 2 or 3 hours to look at a car.
I hope it all works out, which I am sure it will

lol to hijack a thread, I was friends with a german guy who was living 3 hours from Bad Camberg event. I asked him if I could stay with him when I was there and he said no, because it was too far. Too far? I get up at 6am and Im there at 9am and the gates have barely been open. whadya mean too far??? Especially when you consider i've travelled 13000km already just for a vw show.
