ok, got a kenwood cd player, had some old junk in it before, but didnt see how it was wired up before the bus was restored. the instructions say connect in order ground, battery, ignition. I know where the ground goes, but how should i wire the battery and ignition ones? thanks
hey dude
the way i do it is look on your fuse box unscrew it get a test lamp connect the test lamp to free "tongues" and earth it out and if the light comes on when the ignition is OFF then that is your constant power (battery) and do it until u find on that only turns on when the ignition is on and that your ignition wire.
one thing to think is that the ignition wire can be put on constant power so u have to switch it on and off manually not with ignition so if you like sitting there listen to music for a while it dosnt burn your ignition circut out!
just a thought

it aint just cool its aircool'd
i am about to install a cd player in my kombi and it previously never had any stereo. So i looked in the manual that i had and noticed that the wipers only work when the car is on...dah. So i am thinking of using that for ignition. Then constant power from the one with the biggest fuse (cant remember which). I am assuming this will work fine...i hope...
I also assume that it draws its power from the always on and not the ignition one too...correct me if i am wrong 🙂
the battery or constant power draws little bit of power for the memory in the cd player so when u turn it back on it remembers time,cd,track number and where its upto you could run this on ignition if you didnt mind all these things be restarted everytime u turned on the ignition ahahahaha

p.s. donkey check with a test lamp first!!

it looks like the previous owner had the iginition line to the horn which is the same concept as the wipers i guess....so can i run it just on the ignition or will it short out?
i guess it depends how ur radio works. Some radios when u turn off the ignition turn off and then can be turned on again..some dont allow u to turn it back on. I will have to check what mine is and rewire so i am not overloading a fuse.
bump
The permenant power wire is used for memory. The ignition on wire is used to power the radio when the ignition or accessories are on. I wired our old CD player so that it was able to be turned on anytime and that was ok
The new one when it was wired this way keep making the battery go flat as the radio never actually torned completely off, it was in standby mode. The same happens with the new stereo in the beetle when I tried that. Definitley a pain not having an accessories circuit.
if you want to be dead easy
earth to chassis
battery to well battery
and for "keyless playing"
run another live wire (will be heavier than head unit ‘battery’ wire) from (+) terminal, thru an in line fuse (the screw together type) with a 15 - 20 amp fuse, then thru a dash switch then onto the 'battery' head unit wire.
word of caution for all those wires that get tucked up and never seen DO NOT use crimp terminals, solder them and use the 'heat shrink' proper stuff (forgot the shelf name), if you do it good it will be water proof and never ever give you any hassle.
for a not "keyless" system pick up the live acc wire as above described.
cheers hope there are no wiring mishaps that result in a funny burning smell and a sore wallet.
cheers dub.
but yeah crimp terminals are a definite no-no if avoidable.

decided to let somebody do it for me and they are putting in an extra switch for it so yet again i accept defeat and pay somebody!!
lol car hifi is everyones domain of expertise as long as they dont have to pay for any stuff ups.
if your that unsure probably a good choice.
hope it turns out great!
