hi, a friend is interested in getting a 80s or early 90s VW Golf Gti cabriolet, or maybe just a cabriolet. im just wondering what your opinions are on them if u hav owned one or know anything about them.
issues we are concerned with are:
reliability?
cost of parts?
roof? does it leak when they are this old?
what to look out for when buying one?
any help is much appreciated
sam

Hey Sam. We used to have a '97 Golf Cabriolet. Whilst it wasn't the early square shape, it was solid and leak proof. I'm not sure how the mechanicals of the electric roof would last though.

i was considering buying one to be my daily driver while fixing the bug, it was around $7k, red and HOT!
then i bought a MTB and forgot all about it :P

a lady at my work is a big fan of the golf, and she had a golf cabrio in the early 90's... sweetest car she has owned she says, she totalled it about 3 years ago and says it was fine up until then 😀
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I'd love one. I've seen a few in Sydney well under $10K. I think they were all badged GTI from 1990-

good luck
I tried for a couple of months to buy one and they were mostly junk because they are usually owned by tossers who drive them into the ground and have to sell them because theyre are on their last legs

Put the VR6 motor in it with a twinscrew supercharger and a Shrick inlet manifold. I hear they are good for up to 400Hp with forged pistons, big injectors and a decent intercooler. :thumbs

We considered one before... was told to lookout for broken roofs, as they are expensive to replace, same with aircon parts. I know somebody who just bought a dark greyish blue one for under $10k and is laughing day and night!
