I'm just wondering if anyone knows of an IRS conversion kit for a 1964 Karmann Ghia I have looked on the net and found a few different 'kits' for split kombis (1 even a bolt on kit which could be reversed) but nothing as yet for a karman ghia.

If there are no commercially available 'kits' as such, what is involved and what parts are required in a DIY IRS conversion? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Steve

A type 1 pan is the same as a KG pan isnt it? Or close enough?
There are plenty of places to get parts for an IRS conversion for the type 1 as its very popular for offroad.
COR has weld on brackets for Type 1s

Yeah I think the 2 pans are similar (with the KG pan being slightly wider from memory. However I wasnt sure if there were any differences which may cause problems.

there is one serious problem converting a swing axle ghia to irs and thats the rear guards..if you fit an irs the std wheels will fowl the guards ..the inner guard is different and the strenghtening required means alot of metal work ,this is the only swing axle vw which is a real pain to convert...i've seen a converted ghia with std wheeels which were cut and offset to the max inward and looked crap...hairy harris is doing one now which requires the major body work ...big job can be done good luck cheers dsk steve
