I have finally found somone who has the knowledge to rebuild my gearbox. He reconds that the mainshaft bearings are gone and transaxle bearings need doing as well.
1) He finds it hard to get parts can anyone recomend a suplier for gearbox parts (1971 IRS in type 3)

2) Is there anything else I should replace at the same time this guy is very talented but not much of a talker. Basicly ill be geting the parts and he will be installing whatever i get.

Anything I should now or ask for this to happen will be apreciated.

Cheers Nige

Bung a superdiff in it if you are planning a beefy motor Nige.

For parts, I once found a very hard to get IRS gearbox part (a replacement reverse gear) from Laurie Svenson at German Auto's in QLD - (07) 3865-5457

Good luck !

No offence....................but if he is really good, you shouldn't have to tell him what to replace.

Yer Craig I thought someone would say that and to a point I have to agree. But he thinks along the standard line if it not broken then don't touch it but we all know just because it isn't broken dosn't mean it wont brake soon. He also thinks he is doing me a favor if stuff dosn't cost to much so he is also trying to do the most economical repair for me. Which at this time isn't a bad thing for me my new house is sucking me dry.
I just thought if I could get a few opinions on here first I don't want supa diffs at this stage just a good std box as real street power is about 3 years away for me if ya want to be realistic.
So the minimum to keep me moving is the bearing replacement as described above can anyone think of anything els I should do and who should i get the parts from.

Nige, who is rebuilding your box ? I had my ssp IRS box rebuilt by Chris at Volkswest, back in 2002, had new pinion and mainshaft bearings, new seals, new reverse gear and inspected (and did not replace) the syncro's and gears, all for about $950 back then. He is VW factory trained - one of the few VW trained guys left in Perth.

Hi Doug I was just talken to my mechanic (Gerrykay Automotive in Morley) and found out that he rebuilds most of the boxes for the formula 'V' race cars and where he use to work Ive forgotten the place he was the No. 1 motor and gearbox builder. I can vouch for the motor side of things as he built my motor when my car was his sons. Hes just not well conected when it comes to parts and is not into the internet. I beleive it will cost me alot less than what you paid maybe not a complete rebuild but enough to keep me going. Its for my type 3 which is only ever going to be transport so yer I happy for him to do it.
I just need to get the parts as going down the freeway everyday is sending me deff.
