I'm on a steady upward curve of knowledge since owning my Beetle (mainly gaining more as things go wrong mind you....), but tonight's episode has weirded me out...

After 35 mins driving on my way home from work, my speedo started making a sort of popping or 'spitting' noise (it's the only way I can describe it) so I turned my music off to listen. It did it when I went over 30 mph, but only spasmodically, and the little pointer was jumping a bit too. I also noticed my lights inside and out were dimming a bit more than usual when not accelerating (gotta love 'em!). As I was braking to get into my driveway about 10 minutes later, a horrible screaming wail started really loud and didn't stop until I turned off the car with my heart racing.
I've just gone down to see if I can spot something that could have caused it, and truthfully I don't know what I should be looking for, but everything looked ok wiring-wise. The fuses are all good too.

Has anyone had this happen? Or know how I can fix it? I'm scared to drive it now incase I stuff it up even more!

Any help appreciated..... :duh

So was the noise still there when you were stopped but with the engine running? Electrical.....
Or did it stop when the car was stationary.....Cable..

yep. i had it happen once. it was the speedo cable. it was wearing itself thru as it had a bend too sharp in it. made the speedo do some funny shit and make some weird noises.

It didn't make the noise while the car was stationary, so it sounds as though it's the cable.

Is it wise to drive it like this? Actually, even if I could, I don't think I will simply because the noise scared the hell out of me when it started suddenly and I nearly hit a tree! Hahaha :P Needless to say I'll get her fixed a.s.a.p.

Thanx heaps for your help guys! :kiss

If it's only the cable, the worst thing that can happen if it lets go is that you will have no speedo. That's all.

I don't like the thought of driving with those horrible-sounding noises though... but atleast I know it won't damage anything else!

Thanx heaps! 🙂

your semi-auto needs power to hold itself in gear.. and generators dont charge at idle.. so you'll find if you sit at the lights with your headlights on, they will go dimmer.. then brighten up as u accellerate.. the worst is heavy traffic in the rain at night.. barley charging battery, using power for lights and wipers.. i always turn my cd player off when this happens just to conserve power a bit 🙂

Easy fix, disconnect the speedo cable at the wheel spindle :-)

Am I able to disconnect the cable from behind the dashboard, and not at the wheel? My jack is useless, I don't trust it and don't have another.

passenger side front wheel-remove hubcap if fitted and remove circlip from the cable where it pokes through the dust cover in the center of the hub.poke the cable in untill it is clear of the dust cover and the cable is disconnected. The dust cover turns the cable.

Ok, cable is now disconnected at the wheel and noise eliminated. It's weird looking at the speedo to check my speed and it's not movning! Hahaha :P

Thanx again for all your help!
