Hey, bout 2 new heater cables. I put them in, had it all ready just had to connect it up the front and, on it longer than the other!!!

The drivers side one has a bit too much wire and is longer than the passenger side one.

The passenger out sheath doesnt have the little thing on the end so it keep slipping out of the bracket.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Have i got the wrong cables or something?

Hmmm. Sounds like something isn't right. I replaced the heater cables in my 76 camper and had no problems with the length. The two sides are definitely different because they have different ends where they attach to the levers behind the dash. One side (driver's side?) probably is a bit longer b/c it goes on a more convoluted path to the back.

Yea, i tried swapping them round but then they were totally out. I only need another 2-3cm in length, but then the little fitting on the end of the sheath doesnt hold itself in the bracket properly, like its not meant for a kombi or something. The Drivers side cable is perfect, just the passenger side needs a bit of manipulation, just wondering is this is normal? or if i have to buy another passenger side cable?

Definitely doesn't sound right. Are you sure that you got the right cables for your year? Earlier models had different length cables. The correct part numbers for 73-79 kombis are 211711629N (left/passengers side) and 211711630N (right/driver's side).

Glad you got that one sorted out. How'd you pull out the old cables? Mine need replacing too. Everything seems to be oxidised together though.

Where do you get the little cable clamps for the heater box levers by the way? i lost mine ages ago.

Hey, its pretty easy to do. just undo the cables at the mechanism (was easy for me...they were broken off!) and then feed them through the hole down near the floor, go 2 the heater boxes and undo the cables there. Then go back to the front and just pull on each cable and they should slide out of the tube. Sometimes the bits on the heaterbox end get caught, easy if you got a helper... they pull while you guide it through...

The little clamp.... are you talking about the little cylinders with the screw on the bottom, im sure a wrecker would have plenty...

When i got my heatercables out they wernt too bad... if i had of know they wernt corroded inside or anything i would have just sprayed some spray grease down them. Using an aerosole can of spray grease, work out a way to pressurize the tube and wait till it comes out the other end... I did this to the new ones i got and afterwards they were VERY free... Would have been able to get away with just doing that if mine had not snapped at the lever...

Yep. The little cylinders are what I was talking about.

Pressurising the tube. I like that idea a lot.

Maybe one day I should take a picture of my 'heating system' for everyone. I'm fairly sure it's unique. Not exactly in a good way either. It uses thin foam matresses for the air conduit underneath and lots of coke cans for the two pipes going from the heater box to the Y piece.

Sounds pretty easy. Especially with lube. Don't think mine would budge without a good soaking.

By the way, could anyone out there be nice enough as to provide me with a picture of under the dash of the area where the cables connect to the heater controls. Including the area where the cable guides are mounted to something. I'm pretty sure there's something missing from mine.
