Ok tommorrow morning I have to drive from Melbourne to Ballarat for work. The kombi is due for a service, and during my last couple of drives I noticed the generator light flashing and at times remaining solid.
This has happened before and I sort of ignored it and it went away eventually. I know this was probably not good form on my part.
Anyway, please pray for me tommorrow! 😉 :jesus
How's your fanbelt?
Have you checked that all the wires have good connections?
Sorry, just trying to think of some simple things that may make the problem go away. I know what it's like having a vehicle play up before a trip. Hopefully it's not the regulator, or god forbid the generator 🙁

My Beetle was doing that, generator light flashing on quite a lot..... replaced the brushes and all is now as it should be! 🙂
Hope it's not the oil pressure light!

Heheh, thanks fellas, I have checked the simple things, but I am far from qualified from diagnosing the problem.
The light shows a solid red at the moment. I really don’t have time to look at it, so I guess I will have to wing this one. I’m worried the generator will give way and my battery will be screwed.
For those familiar with my previous thread concerning mysterious noises, will be pleased that I eventually found the problem. I am building the confidence to post the solution, due to the extreme stupidity on my part.
Hopefully I will be reporting tomorrow on how the trip went, fingers crossed it’s not from an internet café in Ballarat.
Um, if the Gen light is on, you will get maybe 30km... no charging means a flat battery very soontime!

why do u need the battery to drive? as long as its not night time (head lights) i drove with a genny that wasnt charging for like 2 weeks no dramas just charged the battery each nite......id only be worried if u will be doing lots of stopping and starting. id only be worried if the genny shaft wasnt turning the cooling fan........or is this a type 4? im not familiar with their engine set ups.

woot! I made it, although something was very dodgy in the last 20 k or so on return to Melbourne.
It was also very fucking cold on the way with no heater..
Thanks for the prayers 😉

I'm glad you made it. Now you need to put the battery on the charger and work out why the charging system isn't working.
Also, why doesn't your heating work? If the cables are stuck you can wire the flaps open for winter and closed for summer. Works ok until you can replace the cables.
Also, why doesn't your heating work?.
I am missing a number of things from the heating system, including the scissor looking thing behind the dash, blower fan etc etc.
I intend looking into it, but I have a few other priorities at the moment, although I was cursing that decision when it was 4 deg. in the kombi this morning.
I drove from Valla to sydney with a duff genny on one battery charge, and the last hour I had the sidelights on! Just bring a spare battery with you if you can!
Well yeah I made it back from Ballarat already, was running ok on the way there but toward Melbourne on the way back I heard strange noises from the rear, and I hadn't eaten curry the night before.
Even though I know jack shit about engines, I suspect the spark plugs stopped igniting the fuel and the engine seemed to be missing, including severe lack of power. I heard a lot of popping type noises and some knocking.
I will grab the bentley and have a look, hopefully I don't mess anything alse up!
Hmm, my battery lights (and the oil light) started flickering at highish engine speed once upon a time. We kept going, and three thousand km later she finally would no longer start. But, enough current was being produced to fire and so forth, we just lost indicators, etc... Also had to roll start. I measured the voltage, and it was about 7V. Yeah, the battery was flat of course...
Rebuilt alternator (1800T-IV) installed at the campsite (and the place recharged the battery), and all was well. Battery (and oil) lights haven't flickered since!
The engine fan does blow air through the heating system. I think as long as all the hoses are there, you should get warmish air. I wired the flaps open on mine, and get nice warm air - and in fact, when it's 35 degrees outside, the vertical pipe at the front of the bus is hot enough to burn feet! Youch! I don't bother with the levers on the dash, they're all snapped. The heater cables were replaced before I bought the bus, (part of dealer RWC), but they've never worked nonetheless. I don't mind. It's winter now anyway. Also, even with everything as open as I can get it, it's not exactly a hot-house in the front. Passengers in the cargo area, well, they usually need a blanket.
Hope your engine's OK ("I heard a lot of popping type noises and some knocking.")
Cheers, Aurel.

Thanks Aurel, that seems easy enough to fix the heating to some degree, I will hook up the pipes and see what happens. I have a panel van so no cargo passengers for me luckily!
How much was the rebuilt alternator by the way?
I am hoping I haven't stuffed the engine as well. She did';t sound happy...
Your engine should be fine. It was just electrically challenged for a while.
Don't suppose you have a generator. I mean the fuel powered type for running stuff with.
If you do, and it has a 12v connector you might need to carry that with you for just in case. If you had a pickup I'd probably suggest doing something dodgy like connecting the petrol generator to the battery, shoving the genny in the tray, starting it up and going for it.
But you don't have a pickup so I guess that's out. And I don't know if you have a generator.
Hope you find a decent priced rebuilt or someone that does rebuilds.
Are you sure it's not the regulator? If they don't kick in the battery dies. If they don't disengage, well.. depending on the car it can be bad.
Any one know how to check for alternator output?

I think I paid $165 to have it rebuilt. This doesn't include removing it nor putting it back in the bus - I did that on a sandy campsite, carefully! I have no idea as to whether this is a reasonable price or not. We just happened to experience this little problem near an auto electrician that happened to do a lot of VW work, somewhere north of Sydney, south of that other big town up there. ;-) It was lucky, but the dude there knew we had no choice, being on holiday and keen to keep going in the bus, so he could have charged whatever really. I think he knew it!
Cheers, Aurel.
