Get a speedo from a 68 beetle it has a fuel guage built in, then cut a sender section from a later beetle fuel tank and weld it into your oval one,
Then you have a fuel guage without cutting the dash
If it bothers you find an old oval tank and put the sender in that, and then you can return it to stock if you want to.
I did this to my split and its great, most dont notice the fuel guage and I still have the nice plain dash.

Your fuel tank should have the reserve tap on the bottom.... so you shouldnt be running out of fuel......

no matter how u hool it up, you'll need a sender in the tank sam.. may need to source a spare tank, and run the sender to the gauge in your bezel.. i have a sender, a speedo and a tank from a 69 spare if u need them speedo is in miles, with the tank gauge in the middle

Another option is to try to find one of the ultra rare dehne fuel gauges. They are a period accesory, fully mechanical, it uses mercury or something in the gauge, and runs some kind of tube into the tank i think.
For the electrical sender to work you need a sender and fuel gauge (they have to have the same ohm range otherwise it wont read correctly). The sender also has to be the correct depth for the tank it is going into. You can get adjustable ones new from VDO. Or you can adapt a later beetle sender into your old tank.

I want to do exaxctly the same, but a quick look showed me that Oval tanks are taller, so a later-model fuel sender unit won't reach the fuel in the tank...
A bit off-topic, but Sam, YOU MUST FIT A LARGER FUEL OUTLET TO THE OVAL FUEL TANK IF YOU ARE RUNNING LATER-MODEL ENGINE No ifs, not buts. You WILL DESTROY a more powerful engine due to lean-out with a standard oval-size fuel outlet. A type 3 twin-carby one will do - or better still, get a plumber etc to make you one with an 8mm line. Of course, a bigger fuel line is a must, toonn[ Edited on 9-7-2005 by VWCOOL ]

Yeah the stock outlet with the reserve tap is miniscule. You can just remove the whole tap completely and get a fitting that just threads on to the stock outlet which from memory is plently large (8-10mm??)

Use the sender with the float, you just bend them to suit.

what model was that used on? I thought that was aftermarket...?

12v Beetles and Kombi's use a float sender, but I dont think they'll work with that early gauge.

But a 12V Beetle gauge will work with a 12V Beetle speedo...? Yeehaha!

Sam, find an early Karmann Ghia tank to 1960. (Do the early Bus tanks have the same shape as an oval hump tank?
These are the same shape as a Oval hump tank but have the VDO tank sender fitted. It will work with that gauge. Its the same set up I had in my Grey oval.
