I have an air leak that is getting worse around one of the boots on my inlet manifold. :cry It is now at the point that it barely idles.

Is it possible (preferably easy) to replace the boots with the engine in the car. The manifold is a twin port and still has heat risers that are connected to an original exhaust. The engine is a 1600 on a late model ('74) 1300 case using the PICT31 that came with the 1300.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

its possible but you need to remove the fan housing and generator and possibly the engine lid

just remove the passenger side manifold then the centre section will slide out
replace the righgt boot put the centere back in then the other boot, end casting goes back on
close deck lid
wash hands
open beer and sit down

only needs to move side ways enough to clear the bolt under the manifold which is about 20mm long
and getting the end casting off is the same it has only to clear the manifold studs
if i can do it in my cb then it can be done in any thing i assure you

Hi

You can do a quick repair with some silicone just to get you out of trouble.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been off line with a technical problem.

I already have silicone on the offending boot and the leak has now come back with a vengance so wanted to do it right.

The split boots idea sounds good due to the heat risers still being attached. I can't have a look right now due to night time and rain but would have to remove some of the tin ware behind the motor at the very least in order to slide the centre bar of the manifold anywhere.

I may not have a chance to get at it and try these suggestions for a few days but will get back with an update when I can.

Thanks again.

IF you have the space i would pull the motor.
It really aint THAT hard and it is SO MUCH easier to work on

Yes you CAN do it in car but stuffing round with the heat riser bolts etc is a pain.

I can see what Terry is saying but .........................

The following picture doesnt have heat risers but you can see it would be tight stillnn[ Edited on 12-7-2005 by Bizarre ]

Mick didn't have any but managed to get some in. Taken me a while to get the time to fit them but they are in now (without much hassle at all) and she's purring.

One tip for anyone that reads this post, practice getting the boots to seal several times off the car before putting them in place. It's easier to find a way that works well for you when they are not in a hard to reach place.
