Had a bit of a search got some ideas but after some more
i've got 76 bay 2L.Now i want to spice the donk up a bit
i've got plans for a set of extractors and some engines mod's. Later down the track i may look into changing the
carbs (or is fuel injec pretty sim in price).
What sort of head work ?
What type of cam?
(As always) i want to keep it reliable and fuel friendly and
cost down. If u know of any good engine combo's and the best place to go for these please tell.
I'm sorry if this has been asked a shit load of times.
cheers. field.

Best thing for reliability that you could probably do is get a set of CB performance head, my engine is stock but all the engine builders on here talk about em. You could run a bit more agressive cam, get the crankshaft counterweighted, there is heaps you can do just depends on wallet and how far you want to go!

Extractors are a good start but no heat 😢 You will also need to ditch the stock muffler.

If you've got fuel inj I'd stick with it but IMHO it's too hard/expensive to retrofit compared with carbs.
What sort of head work ?
I'll let someone more qualified answer this one, but it's a matter of how big is your wallet.
What type of cam?
Jake Raby has something like 23 cams for the Type4 engine so that's not a bad place to start! Check out his store

http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/store/

and the shoptalkforums

If you change the cam you need to ensure that the rocker geometry is correct with the new cam. Search for rocker geometry on the shop talk forums and you'll find out how to do it.

A couple of other things to consider:

- stroker crank. Longer stroke than stock but can require clearancing so the crank doesn't hit inside the case and different pistons.
- bigger pistons and cylinders. 96mm is as big as you can go with stock cylinders and heads. Larger p's and c's require the heads and case to be opened up and can have problems with sealing and overheating.
- increased compression. VW engines tend to be low compression. Increasing the compression increases the power but increases the engine wear. A related topic is deck height (distance between the top of the piston and the top of the cylinder at TDC). Too little and the valves and pistons can hit, too much and you don't get the squish effect and more efficient burning.

HTH

Martin.

PS. The above is largely what I've gleaned through reading what other people have done so take it with a grain of salt.

76camper, tell us more about the CB heads. i was sure they were only available for type 1 style engines.

extractors can reduce low end torque on an otherwise stock engine, do a search on this here.

because your bus is a 76 check that it is not required to comply with ADR27a before you modify anything, including removing any pollution gear.

IMO the best mod you can do is Pobjoy's twin plugs: www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=33378&page=1

Porsche 2l heads are the best if you can find some.
1800 bus heads have a bigger inlet valve than 2l bus heads.
most second hand heads are likely to be cracked so try to find new or nos.

Can you run porsche heads on a t4 engine?!?
Are they expensive?
He means the Heads from a 914 porsche, which is basically the same engine in your Kombi, Not the 911 engine.

hi all - interesting discussion.

we're just considering rebuilding a '79 2 litre engine.

The secretary from the local volks club has suggested non-standard carbys to help the engine 'breathe a little better' - any suggestions on this?

Also he suggested possibly using a higher revving cam - would this be expensive?

Finally, is there anything we can do in the rebuild phase to make the engine more fuel efficient?

Cheers,
Tom

as soon as you move away from std carbs your econpmy will be effectedfor the worse but by how much depends on what else you do ,another cam with more lift/overlap worse again changing the cam cleaning up the heads is no more expensive than a good rebuild really,a few bucks but not tons as they are expensive to start with .probably the best is a reputable engine man and good parts .you dont want to be playing with too many extra revs on std rods with a 2lt crank. economy ?you are shoving a brick thru the air, just enjoy
