Am seeking inspiration on places to mount front and rear indicators on on oval window beetle. Mine currently has back indicators in the rear air vent (???????) 🤪 and in the headlights. Not keen on this look and want to change. Can remember seeing them with indicators mounted on the bumpers but did not pay much attention at the time. Does anyone have any pics of their ovals showing the indicators? I intend to restore this to something that is "period sensative" (ie: close to original but with some mods), so would something that would suit!

Whats wrong with the semaphores?

yep semaphores are just fine the 1st week was a bit scarey but I am used to them now, only other thing you need is two fingers
much cleaner look, if desperate I would go for the clear lense/orange bulb side repeaters on a lot of new cars & mount them behind the horn girilles at front & below bumper at back
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54
Have you thought about the itty bitty titty blinkers like on US spec ovals? Personally I dislike them but .. who am I to say

at the moment the semaphores dont work as the car is 12v system. I am looking at getting them going but have to take them out first to sort out the conversion etc.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

I have been driving mine for nearly 2 years, and the previous owner for 25 years and we have had no traffic hassles using just semaphore's. You just have to anticipate what PPL are going to do a bit, and drive accordingly.

mine work on 6Volts even though the car is now 12v, amazingly simple setup, the ceramic resistor you find on many cars fitted with a resistor coil ignition l has been fitted at the fuse box, the wire that supplies 12volts to the fuse is connected to one end & the other end goes to fuse - that is all , coupla dollars at wreckers & 10 minutes, same setup with windscren wipers

Is it legal to drive with semaphores only ?????? I really like that look but didn't think that I could get away with it
KombiKim, I love the color on your oval ! That would suit me to a tee!!! and as for the heart shape tail lights, nice. I would love to get those but think that the chance of finding them is little to none !!nn[ Edited on 12-7-2005 by mscabrio ]

Their legal allright. Thats what the car came with when it was new and as long as they conformed with the design rules of the time (1950's) they are legal. I don't have any seat belts in my Oval either, she gets passed for rego every year no worry's.

yes, if the car had no indicators whatsoever when new, that is also legal, you just have to do right hand turns using hand signal & nothing for left hand turn A freind of mine has a huge 1926 Studebaker which he uses as a normal car on full rego & it has no indicators, no cars have to be retrofitted

the colour was from a formica kitchen chip ! the heart shape tailights look cute but were discontinued after a very short time (for VW !) as because they are brakelights & at a very ineffectual angle, showing little directly to rear, they are not really a very good thing to fit to a later modelnn[ Edited on 12-7-2005 by kombikim ]

heres some ideas for the indicators on an oval.
Harley Davidson bullets.
Also consider the elepahant ears semaphore replacements.
Oh and how about a Marchal Spottie and Aussie only sunrise horn.nn[ Edited on 12-7-2005 by Grey 57 ]
That's the type that I was thinking of !!!!! I wanted something small and obscure.
As for the horn, I was reading in a VW parts mag that you could buy a horn that sounded like a cow ..... Moooooow, that would be kinda cool

Kitchen chip ? Never thought of that. I am after a mint green color and I can't find the exact shade I want. Maybe I have to search further than automotive paint !

mine standard & no problems with semphores or no seatbelts.
That is gorgeous!!!!! Looks very different with the white rubbers ! Have you had a problem with them turning yellow ?
🤘
mscabrio, there is no way i would drive in melb traffic and rely on semaphores. Believe me that the first time you have a 4WD bull bar filling up that oval back window at 70kph you will be thankful for them.

Thanks.no not at all just dont buy cheap crap rubber.

Yeah, that could be a problem !!!! As much as I would love to have Semaphores only, I think for practicality I will add indicators. and maybe a bullbar ?
🤘
bull bar mmm ok that will be different, at least you can take out the bag of cement from the front 😉
here are some pics of the turn signals on my oval..
n the bigger red one is a stop light nice n bright so 'visually impared' drivers behind me can actually see it when i need them too..
as the standard i feel are bit too low for toorak tractor type things..nn[ Edited on 13-7-2005 by h ]

....Trace Bel has the Harley bullet indicators like Deans pic set unerneath the bumper bars...there's a Harley shop in Little Lonsdale street, just around the corner from Elizabeth St that has them for a good price...not all Harley shops have them for some reason
Semaphores are an oddity for most people...they are facinated by them
