Hi Folks

As the standard solex carbs on 1.8 and 2L are no longer available new, has anyone tried type 3 carbs (which one can still buy new apparently) on these engines, particularly a 1.8L type 4 Kombi engine?

Yes type 3 carbs are still available new, and I have heard of people fitting them to a type 4 motor no problems. The bodies and throttle plate are the same, but the type 3 carbs don't have the central idle, accelerator pump bleed off, cold start valves for auto etc you get on kombi carbs. I have not check to see if the throat is the same diameter though, and if you fit a set I'd check what jets it comes with.
I have a set of the new carbs on my type 3, the main jets seem OK for a kombi, but the idle jet and air correction jets don't. You may be able to tune out any problems with the idle mixture screw though.
Another thing I have found is the fast idle cam is crap, so I am looking into fitting one from an old carbie I have or grinding it to work a littke better. The choke butterfly in mine also did not move freely, making the choke not work.

if you have had bad probs with recoed carbs then i would suggest you change the reco man. there is absolutly nothing wrong with a reco carb if they are done correctly, not a kitchen table job with half a kit,get the bases rebushed and flattened check shafts for wear make sure the butterfly hasnt worn a bloody great groove in the body where it sits when at idle because some clown doesnt know how to adjust them etc there is a heap of things to check before you start thenthey are as good as new .i did mine 3 years ago and still havnt touched them still as good as
