first thing to check is the electric element getting hot ,no, do you have power to the element, is the element burnt out? .if this is ok pull the side cover off and is the lever free ,if not fix it is the spring ok ,etc its a really simple device you just work thru the bits . power is supplied via a wire from the pos on the coil fix it then :beer:beer:beer

I take it is a beetle??

I will assume so.

Either get a spare and swap tops. That is the bit that holds the choke.

Or carefully take it off and get a bit of emery and sand the inside throat where it is sticking. You will see where the butterfly is binding on the throat.
Then get a jar of petrol and wash wash wash.
When it is clean of the grit from sanding and it is free put it back on

Hi

After check the things topless said check the air cleaner can crush the top of the carb making the choke stick, also varnish & carbon can build up around the choke spindle, give it all a good cleanup and lube job.

There is also a brass bush around the choke spindle - it presses in from the outside of the carb...if this begins to rattle out it will cause the spindle to seize.

I have had this happen on a carb that was (once) on my '63 Bug.

(I can supply pics if the description is as clear as mud....😀)
