and then go to Indian round the corner and compare people and prices. Discs on the rear of a splittie is not 'simple', for a few reasons. Are ya planning IRS at the same time? - I went down this path a while ago, got a solution.

Go and talk to a few people though, see who's got what, how much etc., there's more than one way to do it.

Then go back and see what you are getting and see the many many customers who are wrapped with their discs.

I wasn't 'advertising', I was just suggesting that there are many ways to skin a cat, and CBB and Indian are close if you're in the western 'burbs, but then Andrew Dodd ain't that far away either. I was told in the end, with my splitter that the rear drums and IRS is a good set up if you're running up to a 1600 motor, so saved money by asking for the pros and cons from a few places and at the end of the day, for what I need to do, opted to stick with that.

In my case, I thought I wanted them, but then got good advice from more than one place that for the driving I do, not worth doing.

Everyone's got their fave 'shop' I guess, and this forum is a great 'leveller' so people can go make up their own mind. And while I'm at it, I reckon that the forum now allows a lot of people that might, a few years ago, hand over money on the say so of a 'shop', to have more options, and more suppliers.

I've had some great advice from a bunch of people in recent months, and as I'm no 'guru', it at least allows me to ask the right questions. Like today I visited a local paint supplies, armed with the right info to get the right stuff for the job I'm planning on doing. I wasn't a pro, but at least I had something to go off. Without it, I'd probably have either got the wrong thing and/or paid too much for it. (Thanks to Mr Hellbus amongst others - and that is an ad - for the forum).

Seeing as though splitties never had discs you will have to engineer the conversion so it may pay to talk to an engineer as well. I have talked to a couple about this topic and even with the engine I want to build (2.2L twin turbo) they were happy running standard late model rear drums, late model front discs, hard compound pads and shoes. Discs aren't the be all and end all of brakes. In fact drums are actually more efficient at braking, where discs don't fade as fast. Unless you are all out circuit racing you probably don't need 4 wheel discs anyway.

Just my opinion.

Aside from the kits, etc that everyone has mentioned, I believe you can also get the beam from a 68 bay and bolt it up to a splittie.

Yes a 68-69 bay beam will fit but they still came with drums,so you have to whatch what you are doing, also when you fit them they will make the split about 1-2 inches taller at the front so you have to fit adjusters.

It al;l depends on what size engine and what type of wheels you want to fit.
I would recommend seeing someone who has them fitted as most kits need you to change to a small 5 wheel.
Again it depends on how much money you want to spend.

i have a 68 front end in mine from cbb it stops a treat , i also have type 3 rear drums in mine , the only issue i have with a 68 front end is you will loose the wide 5 stud pattern,
dave is right if you fit a later beam you will need to fit either adjusters or dropped spindles depending on your altitude needs, the reason the beams are different heights at standard height is the torsion tubes are different distances appart.
personally if i had my time over i would have kept the link pin beam in and gave classic pacific a call and bought some wide 5 discs that will bolt straight up in the front , you can do it yourself without the hassal of pulling out front ends and you retain the wide 5 stud pattern , then if you want to drop it aswell you take off the spindles and get robk to flip them for you
it really depends on what wheels you want to fit .

i have also spoke with a engineer about this and in regards to fitting a 68 beam with discs you will not have any probs getting it certified as it is a upgrade using standard vw kombi parts , like i said it really depends on what you want to do, if you went for the wide 5 option it might be alittle harder to get certified
gravity wont get you high

I would personally go the same way.
My van had the dropped spindles and they were great, If you use a bay beam it gives a harsh ride due to the fact that you have to lower it 2 inches just to get the standard splitty height, so if you want it lower you are not left with much suspension because if you want a 3 inch drop , that means you have lowered the beam 5 inches.

I would also go with the wide 5 CSP from Roy as they use GM parts that are available and they are a bolt on item, it takes 2 hours to fit the kit.
And you still have the wide 5 to match the rear.
I also had type 3 wide 5 drums on the back of mine. They also worked great.
I would fit a dual system to be safe incase one of the brakes leak but I think you have to do that with the CSP kit.(it comes with one)
This is the way I will be going with the new project.

Cheers
Dave

It's common for cars of all makes to have front disks and rear drums. The front wheels of any car needs more braking power because the weight gets thrown onto the front wheels when you brake. The rear wheels of any car therefore need less braking power. If you put too much braking power at the rear you will just lock up the rear wheels and next thing you know you are spinning sideways! My '75 bay has standard rear drums, and even so the rear wheels lock before the front wheels: so I wouldn't want rear disks, they would have too much braking force!

Rear brakes are biased. Same as they are in factory 4 wheel discs. Anyone doing the process would ensure that the bias is correct and that braking is controlled and stable.

Drums potentially have greater effect as they self-actuate as they work. Some engineers are happy with this, but other prefer to see discs all round as drums are only effective if kept adjusted correctly.

Also, drums can lose effectiveness if they get wet or dirty, but disks are self-cleaning and keep their effectiveness.

i can tellyou why i went all discs. one day i had my splutta absolutely chock full of rubbish. the weight bridge at the tip had me at over 1.7ton. the ol girl with the drums did not and would not stop for no body or nothing. yeah drums on the back can be acceptable. but my figuring is if i have 8 people and we do a winery tour ( as we do) and i collect all the cases we buy and then head on home. i want to know that for all my weight and terminal velocity (thanks to my sweet ass motor, and willingness to go in hard) is still gonna pull up nice and smooth. not once in the four years that i have has the discs alround has it let me down, spooked or giving me any thing other than utmost faith and confidence...

lastly, and yes its in my own personal dealings and opinions... and all i can say is i have delt with a few individuals and businesses over the past years, and that none compare/d to what Mike and Custom Bugs and Buses does, say or offers. never once felt ripped, confused or dealt with wrongly.
