Blah! Can someone who know their sh*t about ealy bays (say 68 - 72) give me a quick rundown on the body/mechanical differences with years pleeeease? i.e tailights, rear vent, front beam, brake setup in particular.
There's probably posts on this topic elsewhere but I can't seem to find exactly what i need 🙂
Cheers n beers,

This is a very basic set of notes, mostly mechanical. I'm sure someone can fill in the gaps with body style cues, etc.
Production of the Bay Window Kombi began in 1968. This model represented the first major revision of the Transporter since its inception. It featured a revised body shape including a large one-piece front windshield and sliding side doors on all models. Drivetrain changes include a transmission with double-jointed driveshafts and a new 1.6 litre, 47 horsepower engine. In 1969 two safety-related improvements were introduced - a collapsible steering wheel and stronger doors. In 1970 the engine was redesigned to include dual-port cylinder heads, which improved performance to 50 horsepower at 4000 rpm. The engine size was increased again to 1.7 litres in 1971, with a power increase to 66 horsepower at 4800 rpm. 1972 saw the introduction of the automatic transmission on all models except the pickup. An important
safety revision was the redesign of the cab floor with a crumple zone. In 1973 the engine was once again enlarged, this time to 1.8 litres, producing 68 hp at 4200 rpm. This year also saw the front turn signal lamps relocated to either side of the front grill. The 2 litre engine arrived in 1975, providing 70 horsepower at 4200 rpm.
Hope this gets the ball rolling.
thanks for the info so far Craig 🙂
Anyone else help with cosmetic differences?

Up to 71.. All Bays had lower front indicators and old style rear lights.. No reverse light.. In 72 (known as changeover year) the bay still had lower front indicators but went to the larger square back lights as used on later bays.. Having said that.. There are some hybrids in 72 that can still have lower front and older back lights.. By 73 VW had it all sorted and the late bay was high front and square back lights..
Really late bays have EJ22 Subaru motors, not as common in the early bays. 🙂
The early bays have the 'cresent moon' shaped rear air vents and the later bays have squarer vents.
In 71 Disk brakes came in on the front and they changed the wheels to the smaller stud pattern ... I think.... So up until 70 they were fitted with 14inch wide 5...
So the drums changed in 71 too...
71 was the last year that they had the removable rear valence section in front of or behind (depending on how you look at it!) the engine. This I would like to add was a stupid modification making the engines harder to remove..
Bumpers changed in 72, front floor cab shape changed in 72 along with the front floor mat, hard to find in good condition!
72 was the last year they were fitted with the larger 4 studded metal nose badge, being replaced with the inferioir 3 studded plastic one - yuk... cheap, what were they thinking??
Petrol cap moved closer to the back end in 72.
In 71 they didnt have gearbox mountings, they did in 72
Dash boards changed slightly in 73, hot air vents changed....
Steering box changed after 72 to a aluminium one....
errrrr cant think of any more apart from the obvious already mentioned, U2Uif you want more details I have a 71,72,73 and am just about to pick up a 70
