The wire to the sender unit is shorting to earth?
The sender unit is stuck in the full position?

If the needle is going all the way to full (and probably a bit over full) then Im almost certain that your sender wire is shorting.

Hi Jacko
The most probable spot is the sender itself which is inside the fuel tank.
Just remove the sender wire and undo the 6(?) bolts on top of the tank and withdraw it. If you can, put one in that you know to be good and if it gives the right reading then there's your problem! It's unlikely (but possible) that there is a short under the dash. Good luck with it.

Before you get too busy pulling your shit apart, employ a simple process of elimination. it may save you a heap of work looking for red herrings.

Try simply disconnecting the sender wire from the sender itself for a start.
If the guage reacts by going down, then your problem is the sender itself.
If the guage stays where it is, then the drama may be with the wiring and/or the guage.

Next, disconnect the sender wire from the back of the guage, if the guage reacts then you have faund your fault and its a short in the sender wire somewhere, if there is no change then you probably have a dodgey guage.

Always try the simple stuff first before changing parts and buggerising around.
