eeek. sounds like a normal 30+ year old fiddled with wiring loom and electrical system -riddled with bad earths, intermittent shorts and dodgy connections.

find someone who knows what they are doing and likes beer (but not too much) and let them go for it. they might find the problem/s quickly or it could be a long and painfull process.....

oh thats not cool. if ur wirings that bad id get a new loom and start again. or make urself a new loom. but its possible a wire has melted or come off a connector etc.

trace the wires from the lights back to the relay etc. and check for obvious shorts. anything that looks at all dodgy. replace it with new connector or new wire or whatever.find which wire in ur loom goes to your coil anc check that nothing is connected to that that shouldnt be.

if u have a tacho check that the coil wire for the tacho doesnt earth somewhere (though i cant seehow that would cause problems with lights) get a wiring diagram off the net and have a look but by the sounds of it ur wiring is probobly molested to the max......just like most VW's lol.

You are lucky colleen that Graham lives in Brisbane too...

Best of Luck...

All cars after approx 20 years old have copper contamination problems at all connections including the fuse foxes....
Clean all connections and notice the difference....

take the battery lead off first though...
