I have the idiots guide and factory manual to help me remove and replace the heads , but the books just dont tell you how hard/easy it is to attempt. How hard do you rank this job out there? Shall I give it a go? I have removed tinware and inlet manifolds etc. This is to do with snapped spark plug. :repuke

Hi

No harder than a Type 1, just some of the tinware goes on in a certain order. In some ways its easier that a Type 1, the pushrod tubes go later which makes things much easier.

When I did ours I put all the tinware and parts on the floor in the order I took them off, kind of like a big exploded diagram.

Definitley make sure you put all the tinware back on, including the little ones between the bores. I would advise putting the thermostat back on if you don't have one, contrary to what the idiots guide may say, they are a part of the warming up process of the motor.

It's a concertina-like cylinder. If you have one you'll find it underneath the motor on the right-hand side. It operates the flaps that redirect the air from the fan. Unfortunately the thermostat and flaps have been removed from many motors by previous owners/mechanics who didn't understand the importance of warming oil up quickly to prevent excessive engine wear. Here is a pic I found via Google:

Removing the head is dead easy.If it's only for the snapped sparky, try not to disturb the seating of the barrels though, or you may end up with various leaks.
If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.
