Which do we all recommend for max hp and reliability? looking at doing more work to my baja, its a 1776 twin port, lightened flywheel and conrods, stock can i think and stock heads. Looking at making it a daily driver/weekend drag car. Want it to be fairly fast but also reliable and able to be driven in the wet.
With enough $$$ you can achieve anything (within reason). How much are you planning to spend?
What's the saying?
'Fast, reliable, cheap... you can only have two'
or something like that.nn[ Edited on 6-8-2005 by ruckus ]
a drag baja......thats something different.

2004 Harley Davidson Sportster XL Custom
I think one of the employees at CB Performance in the states a couple of years ago had a baja that they put their Fuel Injection and Turbo kit onto and were getting 11 second quarters on regular unleaded....and it was also a daily driver

68 Country Buggy (KO 367)
68 Country Buggy (KO 669)
68 Country Buggy (KO 789)
68 Country Buggy (KO 815)
68 Baja Bug
76 Baja Kombi Twincab
if you want longevity id suggest sticking to the carbies for the simple reason that we cant get "good fuel" or rather consistant fuel to safley employ an air cooled turbo engine that would be prone to destructive detonation
For max horsepower a turbo setup with a decent intercooler and an external oil cooler works well. Detonation will only occur if you run too much ignition timing or too lean fuel mixture. The reliability will depend on the tune. Would be wicked on a wet road.
i was looking at the cb performace turbo kit, the good thing with that is its fuel injection. also looking at the low bugget turbo kit, thats alright but not as appealing. money isn't so much of an issue, im not looking at like 20 000 but within reason. and we get better fuel here then they do in america so if they run it on regualar unleaded then i should be able to do it with 98 octane.
i would say go a turbo system..for the price of a decent set of twin webers or whateva you go for you could have most of a turbo setup finished.

come on guys, give me some ideas, anyone tried the low bugget version, for the price it looks like a good kit.
heres one i prepared earlier...
I picked up this technical book on turbos a few weeks back for $10. It's old, but the info is still really good. They say VW engines are the only factory engine where you can safely double the power output. The dude said the only flaw in them in keeping the heads cool.
I've been talking to my brother about turboing his stock 1600 twinport for his splitty. I reckon for less than $500 we could have a running draw through set-up like Wayne P's mango. That's fully installed on the car with around 100hp at the flywheel.
For the drags/street turbo is ideal. You don't have to rev the proverbials off the motors (I don't care what people say, revs kill VW cases) and there is no need for ported heads and a big cam provided the capacity isn't to big. Better still, you can drive it to the track on low boost, wind it up, race, and then drive home again on low boost. Now obviously the best setup would be with EFI and a water to air intercooler, but that would probably only cost the same as a set of IDAs once they were tuned properly anyway.
Go the turbo. But yes you will need an oil cooler.
By the way, look in the drag racing forum and talk to Ian Swinkels [iswinkels]. He had a similar 1640 turbo motor.nn[ Edited on 8-8-2005 by pete wood ]
