on the side of my beetle there are black air intake things
near them there is a heap of rust...

The guy i bought it off said that it was because water gets in the intake and wets the foam.... and stays in there

he also mentioned that people take them out to prevent this rust

is this true... is it worth doing????

how do i do it????

they are only there so the air in the cabin can have a through flow path. but there is foam in the turret and it has been know to cause rust. the best solution is to remove the foam out of the turret.

through the engine bay and behind the rear trim panel. or you can be like me and burn it out while repairing the rust problem. i do not recomend this by your self as you need one to burn and one to control the flames

Expandable foam was an excellent invention for the building industry but not for the automotive one! My 72 had lots of rust due to the foam. I got agressive and cut most of both quarters out and then used a 3mm wire with a hook on the end to get at the rest. Car required some major panels to be reconstructed and I also welded up the vents.

The Dellortos under acceleration make it pretty rowdy in the car but there is nothing like 4 venturis to 4 cylinders.

If you can see the rust, you will be spending a LOT MORE than an hour to fix it... Rust in this area is the reason why so many Supers end up at the wreckers...
