take rockers off so as all valves are closed and cylinders are not open to air - or turn over once a week

I would

If moist air gets in there you will get rust on your cylinder walls and that is a good way to sieze a motor

Leave the spark plugs in as well to keep those holes sealed.

Turning by had wouldnt pump the oil enough. Still turn it by hand (maybe once a month??) as it will keep things moving. It will just mean every pot is a compression stage. Maybe take the spark plugs out when you turn it and squirt some oil in. Make it real easy to turn, then put the plugs back.

DON'T turn it over each week - this wipes the oil from the bearings... I de-comissioned a KG recently for 6 months in a shed - almost emptied fuel tank with a pipe, then ran car until it died. For the last few seconds I kept it alive with accel pump - this clears the pump out making sure the WHOLE carb is empty. No juice to goi like jelly... Had fresh oil in sump, and std oil bath air cleaner - so engine is effectively sealed and wil be ready for fresh fuel and battery at Chrissy time

I have stored motors by filling with oil.
Works fine.
But it`s the car you what to keep out of harms way.
The worst thing that can happen is once the car is up on blocks people start to stack stuff on the roof!
I guess it`s a clear space, cos the floor is covered in crap. LOL

Dont bother with it much at all iffen its to be stored in the shorter term say months up to a year or so.
If you like, mix up some fuel 2 stroke oil at about 15:1 and dangle a fuel line from the inlet of the fuel pump into the fuel container and run the engine for a couple of minutes till hot
Itll smoke like buggery and when you shut it down, Voila! One inhibited engine.
After that, just leave it alone. Jam a rag down the carb and up the exhaust pipe if it makes you feel better.

FWIW
My first Formula Vee was rescued from the corner of a large farm shed, untouched for well over 18 years.
We just changed the oil and filter, put in some fresh fuel and fired it up.
And thatsthe preparation that engine was raced on for the best part of a season. That engine would rev to 5100 rpm before valve bounce. Not real good for an F-Vee engine but pretty good for over 18 years of inactivity.

Things like valve springs and piston rings are usually way underestimated and are remarkably resistant to "sacking out" even after many years in the compressed state. So long as they are kept indoors, engines will happily sit for many years untouched.

There is certainly nothing wrong with filling the case to overflowing with oil, turning it over and so-on tho.

Whatever makes you feel confortable!

yeah, I did that, too - with the stand under the axles so it didn't leave the shocks 'stretched' etc

Start the motor and run for a while, at idle choke the motor to a stop with a litre of oil down the carb. Will coat everything nicely. You will need to clean the plugs when you want to restart it down the track.
Oh and make sure the clutch pedal is slightly depressed to stop the clutch plate from sticking to the presure plate or fly wheel. Leave the hand brake off for the same reason.
Silica packs in the headlight and tail light housings.
Windows down a half an inch for airflow.
Change oil before lay up and straight after.
Flush the brake fluid before.

I think Grey 57 was suggesting that the oil be dribbled down the carb rather than poured in one hit...LOL. you dont have to pour it very fast to stop the engine!
I was going to suggest that but this was the exact thing that might happen with someone who didnt quite understand and just dumped the lot in one go and hydrauliced the engine and releived the cases of their heads!
Hence the heavy 2 stroke mix strategy.😁😁😁😁😁
