Im going G50 now, just went and bought some alloy 944 traling arms. These will move the Cv location on the axle out further which will be a help to me, Im moving my trans forward about 100 mm and the longer axles will cut down the angle on the CVs. I will post pics as things happen. After looking into buying better ratios for the 930 box the G50 was a better option in my case.
Thanks Steve,
that tranny looks to be of similar length to the 930, only
it has five speeds. Are you keeping the stock ratios?
Which engine combo are you bolting to it?
The 930 ratios that I have are even too tall for my blown combo
but now that I plan to run N/A I hope to change them to
Albins Dog ring:3.44,2.23,1.6,1.22 with the 4.222 diff ratio.
How is that 0.625 standard top gear....man that's tall!
I was talking to Ivan Albins, what I nice guy and he said that 3rd can be fitted into the 4th gear location, but it was still a lot of money. Im going to the dark side and fitting a 2003 STI motor.
Steve, haven't completed the conversion yet...still running the bus box.
I heard the 930 synchros are a problem so will most likely go with the dog rings.
It may be related to the clutch disc weight they use standard.
I will only get one shot at picking the ratios, so will experiment with the bus box until I am happy.
Oh yeah, I love my Volksys, but I think it is cool to transplant anything into one. Hell I even like cars that have curves that remind me of Volksies...yeah sick I know!
Do you still have MY 46IDAs under your bed? Regards, DB.
Thanks Steve.
Hi jvi054 (John is it?). Yes a 5 speed is ultimately better to minimize rev drop through the gears.
The original reason though was for the strength, since the 930 is stronger
than any other Porsche deal and had a diff ratio that suited my Blown combo.
Now that my focus is normally aspirated, and I have a 930 tranny, I like the
Albins dog rings and he can make any ratios....although they are a little pricey,
(but still damn good value!) so I must make sure that my selection of ratios
is correct.

Hi Dave, its been a long time,:PSo you think deffently the strenght of this box needs to be looked at?JVLRacing
Thanks for the pic Steve, has answered a lot of my questions about the 5 speed box questions for my T3 Ghia.
Is there an issue with lining up the shift rod on a VW pan? I have an Type 3 IRS rear end. Are the issues the same?
PS, if you arent going to use the throttle bell crank on the side of the box, can I buy it off you?nn[ Edited on 14-8-2005 by Grey 57 ]
Steve,Just read the link!!!mate very interesting.I cant believe i spent all this money on the box i have.I musted been blind....Sorry ididnt read the link earlier. Thanks Steve:thumb...JVLRacing
Hey Steve, no trips planned to Sydney anytime soon unfortunatly mate. I will U2U you for the details.
I just read that article too. Is the 5 speed Porsche box the same lenght and style? Been thinking about either taller R & P for VW box (Exy from CBB (?) in Euros) or change to 5 speed Porsche.
John,
I think the tranny you chose was the right one at the time.
The 930 would be over kill for your application and very heavy.
Also with a limited slip and all the right gears you will probably spend over $12000
The cores are about $3000, gears with dog rings are about $5000 and assembly labour and limited slip are unknown....all this plus GST!
The G50 like Steve has may be an option but I dont know much about their strength or weight or gear ratio and synchro options.

Thanks Dave,Yeh i spoke to Henry aquiet a while ago about the box that he built for me, even he wasnt sure the box wouldnt handle the 300 hps....The cost you have given me above SHIT what a blow out!..I spose i might talk to a few Porsche blokes that have a standard G50 and see what they think its like for racing.JVLRcing
Thanks for the chart, the ratios are not "racing" ratios but for the intended use they will be fine. Been drawing on the chassis where it needs to be cut, this wont be a bolt in job.
Are you going to do similar to what Reub's car has, ie coil overs in the rear and a hole through the torsion tubes ? looks like a lot of work, but would be worth it.
I going to use 26mm short (40hp) torsion bars and weld the splines into the left whats leftover after cutting the centre out housing out. Im not using a Porsche clutch so I will most likely use a Saab hydraulic thrust race. The Porsche clutch is a pull type
Yes, I also have a saab throw-out bearing for mine, but will probably
put extensions on the pressure and bleed fittings so as to reach them easily.
That is what Albins has done with his Mega Tranny.
I turned the splined hub (for the tortion bars inboard spline) outside diameter down
and rewelded it back in, but can only get the tranny forward enough to put
the CV's center line back to standard. The engine will still be back in the car.
The 5 speed likely hangs out further.
Oh yeah Steve, what are you doing for a clutch disc? I use 180mm discs and need some hubs for them.nn[ Edited on 19-8-2005 by dangerous ]
Thats a big hole Steve. Its a big and bulky box at the front hey. Would you be able to post some dimensions of the front of the box. Total height. Width and the Height from the shift rod to the very top of the nose cone.
Cheers
Dean
Im getting some adjustable sway away torsion bar splines, hopefully I can cut them in half and have an adjuster in each chassis fork, if that dosent work I will do what you did.
The later Common doors have a hydraulic thrust race with the pipples on the outside, likely I can do the same thing with a Saab one.
Im also moving my tranny forward for better weight distribution, the front will end up near chassis number on the pan.
Do you have any pictures of what you did to barce your chassis after you took the torsion bar centre out?

The sway away centre,
You wont go wrong with swayaway products thats for sure.My drive shafts are this product.JVLRacing:thumb
