Im still relatively new to the world of volkswagen mechanics and have had many joyful hours on my back under the kombi working out there the hell everything is... but there are some weird little pipes that run up inside the air intakes on the sides and seem to go down and through the engine bay... what on earth are they? Im stumped! 🙂
they are the breathers for your fuel tank.

oh ok... call me stupid but uh... how? what? why?... ive never seen anything like it.
hehe ok basically they let air into your tank without letting fuel out. It is a very complicated setup but seems to work quite well.

yea, i was stumped bout em for ages aswell. Aparantly they can be the cause for many kombi fires, if you fill up your bus too full and the fuel tubing connecting the metal tubes is perished they will leak fuel into the engine bay and there goes the bus. Also those tubes should eventually connect to the charcoal canister. Some guyz helped me out not to long ago with it, i will try and find the link for you.
Heres the link to the other post with all the info u need,

They are also useful for connecting return fuel line for EFI. I replaced all of the old perished rubber sections with new stuff, and am only running one breather now, and yeah it connects to the charcoal cannister on the Suby motor. The metal pipes are tack welded to the body on the inside, and one of those welds had fatigued and cracked, so I had to shorten it past the weld and put extra rubber hose on it. It was the one I am using for a breather, so no more petrol fumes for us.
ohh, i always thought it was for re-condensation of fuel vapur.
Charcoal canister? It feeds into the air cleaner on mine i think... I'll ave to check that. What does a charcoal canister look like/?

I had petrol overflow out of mine after over-filling, scared the be-jesus out of me when petrol started running out from under the engine bay in the forecourt. Well at least now I know what they're for.
It goes back into the air cleaner box on your kombi, but in my case with a Subaru motor conversion, it goes into the charcoal cannister as the Subaru motor is post ADR27 (something like that) which is 1976 onwards. Someone will verify this drivel?
ADR + VW = Drivel
clear?

Wow... im glad i asked. Ever since my girlfriend saw a van on fire in the city i've been paranoid about engine fires... i think my pipes are in pretty good condition but i had no idea it could be so serious/complicated... every other breather ive seen is simply a valve in the fuel filler cap. But then maybe i havent seen that many hehehe
Thanks for helping out. 🙂
I just had a look at my setup for confirmation. The little T piece has torn again. Grrrrrrr!!!!! Time for yet another one. looks like the hose going to the aircleaner shrnk and pulled the T piece.
Should it be feeding into the aircleaner on a 74 dualcarb 1800?

I was told it connected to the charcoal canister which is connected to the air cleaner. But i guess just connecting to the air cleaner will do.
ADR 27A 1/7/76 was when charcoal cannisters were needed for passenger vehices for venting of vapour.

I need a T-peice too (also 74 1800), what do I refer to it as in the shop so that they have some idea what I'm asking for and I don't end up drivelling on (like I'm doing now). Does somebody do a kit to replace all the connectors?
You can get brass T-pieces that won't tear from any auto spares place, you should also use hose clamps to fix the rubber tubes (at BOTH ends of each rubber tube).

I'm glad I've seen this post as I've upgrade my carbs on my 72 bus to dellortos and I've just left the vent pipes dangling and I really don't like the sound of petrol pouring out of them.
My pipes used to connect to my air filter. Any suggestions where I can stick them now?
pavelmac for the time being just block them up.
kombipom i used a fuel line T peice with 2 bits of fuel line on each side then the third peice of fuel line went to my charcoal canister.
