Man what a B##terd of a job this is. Pulled off the old one and was just goint to replace the rubber bushes from the flimsy looking after market non genuine "new" replacement. Fitted the new bush to one side of the old coupleing and started to re-install. The dropped the damn thing inside the tunnel. No amount of fishing could get it back. You get to the shoft coupler from underneath on a Type 3. Spent about an hour under there with long bits of wire fishing and fishing. But no luck.
So I ended up using the new crappy one with one new bush and one old bush.
After all this the friggen shifter has more slop in it than when I started. Probably because of the shitty design and cheap construction. man some nights you are better off sitting on the computer, surfing this forum and getting hammered on Becks!!
Not a great evening and had to have a winge.
Oh and I will never by the crappy aftermarket shift couplers again. :onn[ Edited on 18-8-2005 by Grey 57 ]

know what you mean Dean... replaced the shift coupling on the oval a few weeks ago.. it failed unfortunately... sourced another and installed... dropped one of the locking screws in the tunnel!!! lots of swearing/cursing/cries of why god why later i finally managed to get my hand in there.... then to my surprise i pulled out two locking screws!!! lol... someone had obviously done this MANY years ago and said... (^&$ it.. i aint gonna try and get that!

Well I have a happy ending on this one. I bought a long flexible magnet thingo from Bunnings today. Its like a skinny steel snake with a magnet on one end and a handle on the other. F**kin brilliant thing. Fished around back in the tunnel tonight and manage to retrive the lost bits from the original factory coupler. This time I took the gear stick off and it allowed me to rotate the shift rod to get a better angle to work with. Fitted the old factory coupler with new tight rubbers and hey its as good as new.
Sweet. I would recomend any Vdubber get one of these flexy magnet things. Would be real handy if I ever drop a spark plug down inside the tin ware on tune up day. And yeah thats happened to me too.:o
