Ive just finished instaling a 1600 in my 1200 beetle, ground down the bellhousing like required and the engine can be turned over by hand no problem. My issue is the starter, i was told i could retain the 1200 starter with the 1600 but the starter just seems to spin and not engage with the flywheel? The starter worked fine with the 1200. Does this mean i definately do need a 12volt starter? Ive already purchased the bush, and i can get a 12volt starter no probs. Just thought i could get away with it until its on the road. I can't see what else it could be?

it sound like the solinoid isnt working. to check this take the starter out of the car and hook the negative up to the body of the starter and touch the positive to the main terminal . the starter should thurn over and the solanoid should through the gear out in to the driving position. if its not doning this then the solanoid is stuffed and needs to be replaced. not a hard job but it is an experience

I just need to ask this, are you trying to use a 6V starter on a 12V flywheel?
You have clearanced the bellhousing so im presuming you are using a 12V flywheel right?
Well you cant use the 6v starter.
The tooth pitch is entirely different on the 12V flywheel so you will have to fit your bush and the 12V starter. I imagine that the car is still 6V so the 12V starter may have a very difficult time running on 6V.
Im no too sure you have researchd this very well dude as you will have to either convert the entire electrical system to 12V as well or a 6V flywheel changeover is in order for you.
Bummer eh? Either way, plenty of work in front of you.:puke

it was the 6volt starter and yes you were right, the 12volt starter will only work with a 12 volt flywheel. Thanks guys all working after installing a 12 volt starter and bush.
