We will be going to Tasmania for a holiday in January and need some advice.
Should we get a motorhome and take it everywhere or hire a car and stay in hotels. I thought we could base ourselves in a town for 2-4 days and do the sights from there in the car.
What do you guyd that live there think of that? Is it better or not. Also, how long should we plan on staying to get a good idea of the place and where would you suggest we go?
Thanks
Yogie
Take a motorhome. Lots of good free camping down there. Stay as long as you can. We spent 5 weeks there but longer would have been better.
Yogie, you must pay us a visit, we are in Launceston, near the airport, give us a shout if you wanna lift from there, can give you heaps of ideas where to go and when
Cheers
Andy

i recon the best way to see the state would be in a car just cruising around. At least this way you can enjoy our roads and not hauling a motor home around the country side. you need as much time as you can spare, but this all depends on what you are going to be doing while here.
Thanks for that Andy. I will do that when we get there. We are looking to escape the heat of a Qld summer and had heard that Tassie was a great place to visit. Ashamed to say I don't know too much about it though so thought I would get some info from locals on the must see things.
Originally I thought the motorhome was the best option but then thought it may stop us getting in to some places. Liked the idea of not unpacking all the time but if we base ourselves in places for a few days at a time, I figure that won't be too bad for unpacking.
We will fly in to Hobart and figure we would go to at least Launceston, Devonport and Strahan. Wouldn't mind flying over the south west region on a tour I have seen in a travel catalogue. Mainly interested in the history and landscape of the place. Not in to drinking so wineries don't do it for me and my wife gets sea sick so no boat trips in water that may get rough.
Anyway, any ideas from you guys gratefully accepted.
Yogie
You should go around the west coast. Nothing like it on the mainland.........
When I went around, we hired a Mazda 121 - ok it was 11 years ago. We just had the car, and we booked into all of those cool Bed & Breakfasts along the way. There were some lovely B&Bs, the most memorable being up on the hill over looking Cole Bay, and also staying in Franklin Manor in Strahan. In Launceston we stayed in these cool old Butcher Cottages with a huge claw foot bath. 👍👍 Depends what your thing is I suppose, what your budget is, and how long you're going for. We went for 14 days, which gave us 2-3 nights in each place. Also stayed in Cradle Mountain Lodge and woke up to being snowed in. 👍👍
B&B's are the way to go. Every time I go to Tassie, I hire a car or drive my own over and stay in the B&B's. Cheap, excellent accomodation and excellent breakfasts.
You need at least two weeks to do it properly, and that's just skimming the surface.
I like the Wilmot Arms at Kempton as my favorite, but half the charm of these places are the owners. If they change, things can be different.
thanks,
Andrew
we drove from adelaide to the ferry and drove all around tassie for 2 weeks
it was the best holi we have had
stayed in a different place every 2nd night
found our way up to Ansons bay near st helens
awesome
have a great time
You just need to get here M8
The rest will pretty much fall into place.
Nowhere is very far from anywhere here whch makes your holiday so much less a hassle as so much more time is spent doing things rather than actually getting there.
The hire and drive/b&b thing is sure a winner.
Enjoy your stay.

Im not a complete idiot, quite a few parts are missing....
Driving and staying in B&B is looking better. We did that through the UK and it was great. Only thing is, we will be there ealry January so it might be a bit hard gettting in unless you pre book. Since we don't really know where we will be going, that may be hard to do.
Strahan sounds good and the old train that runs from Queenstown? sounds good also.
Keep the comments coming, they all help.

if you can, get hold of a sporty car and go do some targa stages. west coast (especially queenstown) and east coast (especially elephant pass) are best, and if you have time, southern roads are good to. watch out for log trucks though...nn[ Edited on 23-8-2005 by theverybigtallman ]
early 60s beetle for sale - ex bush basher - spares - $100 or offers
If you're doing the Elephant Pass, make sure you have the pancakes at the place near the top. Excellent.
Check our Fire Bay. Beautiful.
The Freycinet National Park is also beautiful - take a day pack with nibblies, good hiking shoes and plenty of water.
Russell Falls - just gorgeous. Worth a visit.
Cradle Mountain is great in winter - there's a couple of nice hotels near the entrance, and a caravan park with cabins if you're on a budget. I'd stay in the hotels as I've stayed in the cabins before and needed more warmth.
thanks,
Andrew
Andrew, need more warmth, haha crack me up, well i love the cabins, we stayed in some at cradle and was great heaters fridge (dont see the point as outside will do) stove, home from hone, we did dove lake, marions look out (hard) possibly walked 30 klms in a day, was cold and snowy but keep the heart pumping and its fantastic, bloody hell give me a shout i will come with yahaha
