i have seen somewhere twin carb maniolds and the like??? any ideas where i could get that stuff from
or is the reliablity of the motor an issue once it is worked??

Unless you really want the 36hp bit - just put a 1600 in.
Make it a single port if you are worried about original looks.

If you do find some 1100cc parts you will need to sell a kidney to get them. And then you will end up with 38 ponies.

Just TOO much hard work and $$$ for the rewards.

A $500 1600 will just about double your horse power.

Twin Carbs on aluminum okrasa manifolds (just the 28 pictsx2), 8.5:1 compression, Cam from pobjoy, Ported heads, bigger valves, 8 dowelled crank, balanced, HD oil pump, and non restrictive exhaust................................that's what I did !

Probably the highest costing $/HP engine you will do......................but hey at least it's a "period" performance engine.

yeah....... idont see the point o building 1600 single port.....
i want something diferent......... and not many people are running the 36ers any more.... could they handle a 30 shot of nos???
other oprion is to build up a clean t4 motor with just cam exhaust and carbs/efi... but wouldnt be period

The point of the 1600 is exactly Craigs point.

A hottie 36 will drive like a strong 1300 as stated above.
A good 1600 single port will "look" original as it wont have the aluminium twin port manifolds and you will double you ponies.

Craigs desription i recon would cost $4k in parts and machining alone.

The 1600 sinble would cost a couple hundred 2nd hand.

Whatever, just pointing out a cheap road to go.

The Type 4 road will give a lot more torque and a few more ponies than a really healthy 1600-1776 and cost a crap load more as well

Being different to this extent cost big $$$

NOS will only destroy your hard earned $$$ is a blink of an eye.

Have you converted to disc brakes yet??nn[ Edited on 22-8-2005 by Bizarre ]

I've been playing with a set of custom made twin single port manifolds and carbies. It was more for the fun of it rather than any serious power gains. However, having said that, I can now quite easily spin up the rear wheels on my little 40hp and there is a definite power increase. Problem is, now I'll probably go further, and port the heads and look at a cam. The things we do. I've also purchased a set of genuine Ken Virgin twin single port manifolds, carbies and linkages to go on the project Beetle. That should look real sweet.

What about a set of these babies. Monaro Motors twin SU conversion. This plus a Lukey 4 outlet muffler knocks almost 10seconds of the 0 to 60mph fiqure and top speed goes up to 84mph. Pretty handy increase over the stock 36hp of 28 secs for 0 to 60 and top speed of about 70mph or so.

Ive had both the Judson and Ken Virgins twin carbies on ( still have the judson fitted.) The virgin twins give far better performance than the Judson and he car has much more torque

Ive also got the Brabham Exhaust as well
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

A later case will NEVER look period in an early car. Yes it's more expensive and yes the gains are smaller but the uniqueness is the big thing. Period performance is about more than just horsepower.
A nice 356 motor would be sweet too..........

yeah.... im after a) period performance.... 1600 hasnt got the all in 1 oil stand..... the first thing i look at when i pop the lid on an older beetle.
i want to be able to say that alll that 36hp is from a 45 year old motor.... money isnt as much of an issue...... i have several spare motors... and money and time are two things i have to waste
and i would consider a small shot of nos
or B) a t4 motor with porsche fan shroud, mild cam and exhaust and weber carb setup

Mate exactly what is it you want? you ask about 36Hp mods and say that putting in a 1600SP would not be "period" and then on the other hand you are prattling on about fitting a T4 enginer with Porsche fan shroud?????
C'mon dude make a decision.
NOS eh? That ought to look real "period"

If you have so much money and time at your disposal, why are you asking how to hop up a 36 horsie engine on a 'net forum for??

Just take your engine to a reputable builder, Pobjoy ought to do, write out a cheque and put a one on it, tell the engine builder to "make it go but keep it looking stock" and ask him to add the noughts to the cheque when he is finished.

That ought to keep you happy with your period look and make you car go...like a bog stock second hand TP1600 .....sheesh!

Better still, ask Ian swinkels to make you a clone of his turbo engine, what about a turbo 13B rotor, hey whay not go the whole nine yards and fit a 911 turbo 6, or what about a 350 Chev, a sidewhacker ford, a lister deisel, a 903 Cummins,...... a Detroit 892...sorry got carried away there. bwaaaahahahahah!

Have fun!

because i am trying to make a decision... y is it some one all ways ahs to bag out other peoples ideas......... im not saying a have thousnads to throw at the motor immediatly... but i have time as i currently have a running motor in it, and nos tucked away wouldnt stand out like a dogs balls....
and i have 2 cars 2 do this to... and have come to the conclusion of doing both, just to stick it to ya tass....
and i will go buy a t4 motor 2moro, so if any one out there has a porshce fan, shroud or alternator, or a upright conversion kit u2u me please
