the 3rd number in the chassis id (under back seat of beetles) indicates what year it was manufactured ,obvious differences in body shape should stop confusoin between 60's and 70's. if its a 76 the chassis no. should start with 116

Dont think they ever had numbers like the Super beetles???

Akean1 - the unber you are talking about is the serial or vin number.
My 1975 L bug has 135######, but that is different to the 1303 model designation.
Futue te ipsum!!!

Yeah I am talking about the body / chassis model designation, in terms to the 1302 n 1303 etc etc

I wonder what weird name / term the pommies have for this model eg Samba, Bay window, Razor etc

Hi

I dont think they even had anything written on the decklid, Ive always called them 76 beetles. Did other countries end up getting these as well, I mean with the IRS, disc brakes, 1600 etc?

The 1976 beetle here was supposed to be a unique AUSTRALIAN model. Some references call them the "Best Beetle Ever", or "the model with no name". I think I read in abook that they do actually have a model number, but that no-one seems to know what it is! One year's supply was sent to Australia and assembled here. They sold on into mid 1977 apparently. They are supposed to be the only bug to have no "VW" or "Volkswagen" name or badge anywhere on the outside (except for hubcap emblems) -- possibly the worst ever attempt at anonymity!

The "Best Ever" name is a reference to the unique combination of beam F/end, 4-joint rear end, latest/best 1600 engine (at that time), and disc brakes all round. (All US models had drum brakes all round; not sure about UK). I had an argument with an insurance co. once who insisted mine didn't exist as it wasn't in their guide. Ended up calling it a '76 L bug to satisy them. I think they may be fairly rare, but don't know how many where imported.

OK yes "" Best Ever "" would suit the car model well.
As most guys doing a modified bug go for the Torsion bar front end and IRS rear end

So it could be a "" BE ""

Although i suspect the pommies have a name up there sleeve... LOL

It has the model desiginator 112 on the ID plate
