What are the differences between standard and deluxe beetles? I'm particularly interested in the 1959 model but I'm sure other people would like to know for other years as well.

In 1959 vw only produced deluxe models...In 1962vw introduced a price leader model based on the standard which was available O/S..these cars were fully assembled in melbourne and a very high percentage was local content including much of the body pressings...so for five and half years vwa produced standards / custom models which by the way cost the factory more to produce and sold at a reduced price! hope this adds a little light to the subject, there is a previous post that lists the differences between the models cheers dsk steve
This is just from memory and is probably incorrect.
Deluxe has:
the outside trim strips and can have twotone paint.
Synchro in all forward gears.
(probably only foreign models if at all) hydraulic brakes instead of cable brakes.
If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.
Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based LCA pop-top camper. Motor: Nippon 1.8L Single port Wasserboxer, Transmission: 3 rib 002.
FYI 19052 standard and custom beetles were produced in australia.
No glove box lid on custom as well plus painted bumpers. Roof lining only on the recessed part as well from memory. Did they also only have a prop to keep front boot open?

Standards were only produced as per what Steve said.
They had no body trim, painted door, bonnet and engine lid ( no key ) handles, Painted bumpers, hubcaps, No glovebox lid, no fuel gauge interior light, only center headliner, plain door trims and seats etc etc
Thanks for all the replies... but now I'm confused!
"In 1959 vw only produced deluxe models" vs "Standards were only produced" - which is it?
"They had no body trim, painted door, bonnet and engine lid ( no key ) handles, Painted bumpers, hubcaps, No glovebox lid, no fuel gauge interior light, only center headliner, plain door trims and seats etc etc" - is that a description of the standard model?

In Australia
VW DID NOT PRODUCE ANY STANDARD MODELS UNTIL 1962
So your 1959 is NOT a standard model its a deluxe
In 1962 when VW Australia produce the STANDARD model it had the following They had no body trim, painted door, bonnet and engine lid ( no key ) handles, Painted bumpers, hubcaps, No glovebox lid, no fuel gauge interior light, only center headliner, plain door trims and seats etc etc
Great, thanks for clearing that up. I guess that means it's a 114 model? It's RHD with no sunroof.
