there is NO ID plate only a chassis number under the rear seat on the center tunnel

Fill in your profile and advise where your located
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

There should be an ID tag on the right side under the bonnet. It should have the numer 14 stamped on it as well as the chassis number. This number should be the same as the one under the back seat

You could start by checking the chassis number on
http://www.type-14.com/
There are also paint chips for the various years with names and numbers.
If you poke around, I'm sure you will find the original paint ; ie remove a door card.
If all else fails for 10Euros or thereabouts you can get your car's 'birth certificate' from VW. This will tell you the day it left the factory, the colour, and where it was bound for; a great conversation piece!

You can write to VW in Germany with the chassis# and they will provide you with the info on the car ie delivery date and location, colour, etc. I got mine when they used to do it for free. I believe now it cost about 15 euros or something like that
