Hi all

In took my speedo out yesterday to check the bulbs as the oil pressure light wasn't working. No bulb and no wire connecting to the oil pressure switch answered that one.

However, I also took out the ignition switch to make it easy to take out the speedo. I thought I had been careful not to disconnect anything, as I'm a clutz with wiring, but when I've gone to put in back in and turned the key...nothing.

I noticed one of the wires connected to the back of the barrel wasn't connected to anything. The wire to the starter is ok, but after two days of wiring diagrams, banged heads and internet searches I can't see what it should connect to.

I've attached a crap diagram to show which wire it is.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

No 30 is power large red wire
the black is is ignit (power to coil when switched )
the 3rd wire goes to the starter solinoid. usually joins to thick (red with black tracer) wire.. ???

15/54

-is there two wires coming from this terminal?

-15 is the wire to your coil and putting 12v to this will light up the oil and gen lights in your speedo. (prob black with yellow stripe?)
-54 is the power wire that will go to your headlights (prob black)

you may find these two wires may join elsewhere and only one wire will follow through to your ign. barrell- follow them back to be sure

hope this helps😁

Thanks for your help gents.

I'm a little thrown by the fact that the wire coming from 15/54 is a fat red wire, and there are two thin black ones coming from 30. 😠

You've pointed out where everything should go so I can work from that. I've just got time for half an hour of knuckle skinning wire following before work.......

Anyone know a good mobile auto electrician in Sydney ?
HAhaaha.......(sigh)

Big fat red one from the 50 terminal goes to the solenoid.
Big fat red one from the 54/15 terminal isn't connected to anything, which sounds all wrong.
Small thin blue one from the 30 terminal goes to a lights alarm in the dash. Can ignore this one.
The other small thin black one from the 30 looks like it goes to the second fuse from the right in the fuse box, but all the wires were tight so it was hard to tell for sure. Unscrewed the fuse box to see better. Obviously touched something it shouldn't. Sparks, smoke, panic etc etc.

Battery disconnected. Walking to work 🙁nn[ Edited on 11-9-2005 by flamesnm ]

I'm not sure where you are in Sydney but you can try Paul who has worked on lots of VWs.

Thanks KOM123.

Riverstone is a bit of a hike. I'm in Frenchs forest on the northern beaches. I'm going to try and find a mobile auto electrician ( if there is such a thing ).

Thanks Paul. I've got one more thing I want to try after several pieces of good advice from here and DSK.

I'm pretty sure I had just clipped the terminal off the light switch initially, which meant the ignition switch wasn't getting any power. However, in my fumblings I've obviously done more damage.

I've replaced all the fuses, hooked the battery back up and made sure nothing was earthing that shouldn't. I have power to some switches ( hazard lights work ) and no more smoke :P

Headlights don't work, and as this is the hotwire from the battery, I'm guessing that the wire to the light switch is loose / disconnected / corroded.

My thinking is if I can get the headlight switch hooked up again, get the ignition switch hooked back up to the light switch, then I should be in bidnez . No ? Yes ?

Getting a VOM tomorrow to test stuff as well.

If it's a non starter, is there some other way I can get the thing started to get it down the road to an auto electrician ?

Thanks again in advance for any guidance.

Niall
