lately when ive been driving the fasty ive been smelling odd smells...like fumes maybe...it could be other cars on the road but i think its too much of a coincidence for it to happen more than once. is this a big issue? ive been thinking maybe i should take her to a mechanic...any advice would be great 🙂
Check that you haven't left the fuel cap off (even the best of us have done it 😊).
Otherwise if the heater is on it might smell a bit oily but that's about it?
I like to blame the dog !

vern stinks quite bad whan the heater is on and he always smells of petrol !

Hey they are old cars, and they all have certain smells as such.

this smell is new so im a little scared...ill check the oil level tommorow, i have other priorities tonight :beer :beer :beer 😉
When i got mine it had a couple of very strange smells.. one turned out to be paper in the heater box (??) and the other was a loose wire dangling against the exhuast...
Mine developed an odd "hot oil" smell just the other day... the oil breather hose (black pipe going from next to oil filler cap to underside of air cleaner) had popped off. I gave it a hose clamp and all is well now :-)

i just checked the oil and she's got plenty (i even asked the guy next door's opinion on my oil level and he also said ive got enough) im driving up to the central coast today so we'll see what happens...
no smell issues today (well im pretty sure) but other issues...shes not having a good week 🙁
Good luck!

Check that the air hoses from the fan housing are still connected to heater boxes. If your car is running extractors there is a chance one of the flimsy tubes have come off. It's the quickest way to overheat the Type 3!

hehehehe i don't know what those things (air hoses, fan housing and heater boxes) are but i know she does have extractors 🙂
If you want to keep the Type 3 on the road for an inexpensive extended period you'd better get serious and learn about these things very quickly! An overheated engine can get rather expensive. Don't forget that if you do break down, VW or not there aren't many who will risk pulling up to help these days!
