ive got a 77 kombi... i accidentally crushed the heater pipes from the auxillary fan in the engine bay... i cant be bother replacing them and was wondering if its best to block the holes with something?

currently ive just got fly wire mesh covering the holes to stop stuff falling into them

It's a good idea to block the holes to prevent hot air coming up through the holes which will make your engine run hotter (the heater fan has one-way flaps in it that normally prevent inflow of hot air). One easy way to block them is to stretch a rubber sheet over them and hold the rubber in place with big hose clips (my kombi had them blocked like this when I bought it, now I've put the stock fan and hoses back in).

So the hot air in the heater boxes goes into the engine bay? For some reason i thought it was the other way round... the engine air going into the heater boxes???

How exactly do they work then?

Well just to make it simple Hot air goes up, so the hot air from arond the exhust pipes in the heater boxes comes up the pipes into the engine bay.

The heater boxes work likes this, the fan takes air form the engine bay ad blows down the pipes to the heater boxes ,then it travels along the boxes out the other end through the tubes into the cabin hot.

I plugged up the holes by using thick rubber and a clamp.

hope this helps
