I have a set of these on the back of my buggy (wide five wheel pattern off a wagon?), but they just don't seem to work all that well. All the parts in them are either new (shoes and slave cylinders) or completely recoed, the exception being the backing plates and drums, they were sandblasted and painted. I took them apart a while back, and a mate noted that the drums look to be oversize.

Are the early wagon rear drums bigger than fastys and notches?

Does anyone have the max (dia) dimensions for them?

Also, is there anywhere you can get new drums?

If not, is there anything you can do with them, ie press in metal inserts or get oversize shoes?

p.s. My long term plan was to go to Falcon rear discs, but it would be nice to get these to work as I have heard they should work well.

there are oversize linings, take the drums to a brake place and they should machine the lining to suit.

i have falcon on mine and they seem to be real spongy

you can use kombi rear slave cylinders they are bigger in diameter 28mm i think
that will help with your drums

Hi

All the type 3 drums are the same between fastback, notch & wagon, this holds true even with 4 stud drums, the wheel cylinder sizes are different between models. You can get oversize shoes but make sure the drums are not machined out past the legal limit.

Okay
how do we tell if the drums have been machined past legal limit?
and do they need spacers on the stub axles ?

(brake numpty here 🙂 with type 3 wide 5 rear drums on a beetle pan)

Yeah all drums were the same size for all models.

To tell if there worn beyond limits .... theres a small 45 degree chamfer on the edge on the drum and if its not there then the drum is worn.

Finding new or good condition wide 5 rear drums for a type 3 is almost no existant ive only seen 1 set in the past 10 years or so n they were nearly worn out

You would be better off fitting the dics before you try n find good drums

"""i have falcon on mine and they seem to be real spongy""" subibaja

Have you bleed the brakes correctly, also adjust the free play so it spot as you now have probally twice the surface area increased over the existing cyclinders, you might be able to fit a balance valve in line to fix the spongeness

If theres NO lip or the brake drum shoe contact area is worn below the wear mark then its time for new drums

well there is still 4mm or so of lip, but there is not chamfer that I can see and the drums look like they need a machine as well. There must be a way of recoing drums like this. What do the antique car guys do?

some older cars like A n T model Fords make a steel band and have it interference fitted by heating the drum n cooling the ring into the brake surface area then have the drum machined back to a stock size

an expensive process but the only way if you carnt find the correct drums. I would be fitting the discs first n not stuffing around

Who rebuilt the brakes?

If you, well you have to live with it...

If a business, I'd be paying them a visit and asking for an explanation. Did they tell you they were machined oversize? They have a legal obligation to inform you. If not happy with their response (ie replacment) I'd be ringing the MVRIC and telling them that they were put together with the drums machined past the servicable thickness.

Hmm, I spoken to a few people about the drums in question today and the mystery continues. Dave, the chamfer is all very well, but what I really need is someone with a factory manual to look up the "max allowable diameter" of the rear drum. This is big 5 stud style drums.

This would be for a 1500cc 6volt type 3 up to 1966.

Please, does someone have a manual?

My book gives the diameter of 248mm (9.76") for the Type 3 rear drums. Will check tomorrow in another one for wear limit.

Hmmm,
will have to check my drums for that lip, on teh other hand maybe I should check to two VW Factory workshop manuals I have at home as well (D'OH!!) to see if they cover rear brakes!!

PS. I have seen new drums for sale out of the states, but I shudder to think of the postage for two drums!

From the "Intereurope" manual, the new diameter is 248.1 + 0.2mm. Wear limit is 249.5mm. Boring size for 0.5mm oversize linings is 249.1 + 0.2mm. WEAR LIMIT UNCHANGED AT 249.5mm. Hope that clears up your question.
