HI all, just got as new gen from u pull it went to put it in and the fan hits on the back of the fan shroud, it came from the same model beetle as far as we could tell.
is there another reason why this might be happening?
swapping for the old fan off the old generator isnt an option.
Any help?
Danielle
look down the page and you'll see that the new fan is wider than the old.nn[ Edited on 20-9-2005 by lulu94 ]

Hi Danielle - sorry to be picky but can you clarify the bit above, I didn't quite understand it.
Just measure the width of your new fan vs the old. If you try and fit a fan that is designed for the later 1600 "doghouse" shrouds into an earlier non doghouse shroud, it won't fit.
Other possibilities are to check if the shims are still present which can be used to space the fan away from the shroud once installed.
can sometimes simply be that the side screws above the spark plugs - of the housing -are offcentering this to the fan and scrapes.try loosening them and manoevering the shroud ....the shroud (doghouse may be twisted and needs tlc and then tighten the side screws very hard.......use hex bolts instead of screws 10 mm and a ring spanner or socket.

Sorry Das, i got a generator from a place called "u pull it"
and we put it in the engine/fanshroud and the fan on the back of the generator was rubbing on the fan shroud.
i keep forgetting that u pull it is only in adelaide, i think its called pick a part or something in the eastern states.
will have another look at the shims and see if that will help.
Thanks for the info.

Ryan here, because Danielle gets confused easily 😉
the motor is a 1600 by the bore and stroke I measured between taking it out of the 1st car and fitting it to its new home. The original fan shroud was rattling due to a loose baffle?? inside, so we put a new one on from upullit also.
All was going well until a few days after getting the bloody thing rego'd and running, it siezed the front (or is that rear?? belt side) bearing in the generator. I had my brother the auto elec. to check it out and fit new bearings, but the bearing case had spun in the housing and damaged it, so we had to find a new brush plate, new/secondhand generator, or convert to alternator, preferably for $0
so we checked out the local self serve auto wreckers, and found a mint 1970-ish 1500 beetle, as close to the same as could be expected, balljoint front, swingarm rear etc. etc. it all looked the same, so I pulled the gen out of it.
got it home, went to fit it all up, jiggled it into the fan housing, fitted the bolts finger tight, sat eveything in place, and it was scraping somewhere, so I tried tightening the bolts, hoping it just wasnt seated properly, but still scraping, so I looked for witness marks.
the edges of the blades, where they come through the back of the fan and are bent over is rubbing on the back inside of the fan housing, unfortunately, I dont have the old, bent unit to compare with. it seems to me that either the fan itself is slightly wider than the old one, or is sitting back a little more and too deep into the housing.
are there shims or anything that could be removed to bring the fan closer to the gen body, or is there supposed to be a gasket or shim between the fan housing and generator?
fitting the gen up to the old fan housing out of the car, it seems that only a couple of mm would make everything better.
are there various widths of the fan itself that could be causing the problem?
the motor has what I am led to believe is the doghouse cooler, big upright thing bolted to the top face of the case.
oops, just looked in the gregorys manual we have, and t sems there are shims spacing the fan from the back of the gen, I'll see if I get time to check it out tomorrow.

just another reply, after realising there are shims, I took the gen to work, shuffled the shims to the nut side of the fan so the fan sits as far back as possible.
and the damn thing still hits 🙁 so whats the scenario?? it all looks like it should be working, except for the fan housing being too narrow for the fan.
the fan housing is now off, so its either modification time, or umm, adjustment time. unless someone has a narrower fan they would like to donate to the cause.
measured the width of the fan at the outer edge, flat to flatacross the outside is 37mm. this is about 1-2mm wider than we need, the ends of the blades where they are folded over the back to hold them in place is what touches. hopefully I will be able to pick up the old fan tonight to compare. (the old one is bent out of shape so no good)nn[ Edited on 12-9-2005 by lulu94 ]

Ryan here again, finally got to look at the old stuffed gen (been at jambo for the weekend 🙂) and the original old, bent fan is only 31-32mm across the outside of the fins.
sooo.. does anyone have a narrow fan, or a shroud to suit the wide type, or so we have to go scrounging again on the weekend??

we should be able to get the fan shroud to suit the thicker fan, but does anyone know, will it bolt in place of the shroud we took off?
if so to me thats the better option because it gives more cooling.

It sounds like You have a 1968 Beetle with the NON doghouse oil cooler.....
and You are trying to replace it with a fan from a Doghouse oil cooler type which are wider slightly....
You can't tell by looking and not sure what the difference is but it IS wider....
You will need a fan or generator assy from a 1500 engine
NOT a 1600.....

thanks lee.
this fan IS off a 1500 beetle, well its supposed to be, the badge says 1500 anyway.
so, I was always under the impression it was a doghouase cooler fitted to this car... so what does a doghouse cooler look like?

lol, thanks.
so does anyone have a pic of a doghouse so we know what it actually looks like??
went back to take the big one off and have a look, but remembered the left hand screw in the fan housing is not accessible, and we didnt have tools.. so we couldnt look
