I have just picked up my type 3. Drove it from Ulladulla to Crookwell, (180klms) and used $35 worth of fuel.

I get better economy from my V8 Rover, driving it hard!!

At full throttle, under load, it appears to be flooding. As in, up the Clyde mountain, back a gear, foot flat down, big flat spot, back off a bit, it goes faster. (And my wife still overtakes me in her Hyundai Excel)

When not under load, it motors along nicely, though is obviously enjoying a drink at my expense.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to the first thing I should be looking at in the morning when I get some light on the situation.

It is a 1973 1600 fuel injected. (Auto)

I can't really complain, paid 560 dollars for this mid life crisis cure.

I am sure a service and injector clean would make it feel much better, always does me the world of good.
However, what I am wondering is: is there a known issue that causes these motors to behave like this? Someplace I should be checking for dead rats or loose hoses?
Or do I just assume that it is probably a combination of many tuning factors?

Loose hoses is a hint, Check all the vacuum etc lines around the intake manifold as they look okay but go hard and brittle after 30 years and let in air. Maybe a vacuum sensor hose has come off (although this would make it rich at idle and lean at revs)

Thanks VWCOOL,
Suppose I should replace anything that looks like a thirty year old hose.

Even with it in perfect tune, your wife's excel is still going to overtake you!

FI type 3's tend to run rich if battery voltage is low. Check the entire charging and electrical system. There are a number of parts of the FI system which could cause these symptoms if not in good working order.

Unfortunately FI motors are fairly uncommon in Aus, so knowledge of them is limited. I suggest you try vwtype3.org, they are very helpful and know alot about type 3 FI motors.

I really don't like that idea at all. Surely with enough folding stuff, and the right approach I can change that without having to leave the VW motor behind.
