Y'know, it's good that Kombis are easy to work on, and that they are pretty reliable and all that, but I'm just about sick of broken clutch cables. I reckon they last about 1 or 2 years with regular daily driving, and they always break without any warning at times when it's hard to get by without a clutch !
:cry:cry:cry

They also always break down the back where the cable goes through the flexible section of tubing, so I guess that the cable just can't cope with the change of direction. I've tried putting them in with plenty of grease and they run as smooth as silk, but then break anyway.

What I was wondering was- does anyone know of any suppliers of extra-good quality cables. I remember having some braided cable on a motorbike clutch cable a few years ago and it was wonderfully flexible, smooth and long lasting. I guess I could get some of that cable, but I have no idea how I'd go about getting the fitting swaged onto either end.

Any suggestions ???

Kommer.

Hi Kommer
With your clutch cable this is the go.
Ring Andrew Taylor (boss man) from Volks Auto they have been around 30 years........... 8 kms south of Adelaide CBD
He has clutch cables made for Kombies
Slightly thicker than the normal and...on the adjustment rod
end slightly longer to take up that extra stretch.

The 76 Kombi I had years ago broke its clutch cable religiously every year, I reckon I could almost set my calendar by it! I had it looked at, tried extra greasing of the new cable, etc, just ended up putting up with it.

I used to carry 2 spare cables in the car as well as everything else I would need, even overalls, so that when it broke on me I could just pull over for about 30 mins or so and change it.

I also learnt to try and not lose the butterfly nut each time it broke......in the end I drilled a hole through one side and basically had it chained to the car, so instead of losing it, I'd find it hanging there waiting to be hooked up again.

Good luck in finding a better cable, excellent if you can!
