after our dramas with Dani's beetle and the diffeent gen fans and housings..

I did notice another thing. on her car now is a 30-PICT 2 carb, and on the 1600?? we tried to use bits, it had a 34-PICT 4 or something.

anyway, what do the different numbers cast on stand for?? thottle size? venturi size?? and would it be a worthwhile upgrade to the 34 PICT unit over the 30?

The FIRST number is the throttle bore size (mm), ie. diam. of hole at the bottom, around where the throttle butterfly is. The last number, when used (for Solex's) is the 'modification' no., eg. a 34 PICT-4 is a later "improved" version developed from a 34 PICT-3. The letters are to do with the actual/overall design, eg. PCI, PICT, PHN, PDSIT etc. There is a 30, 32 & 34 PICT, for example.

None of the above tells you the venturi size. It should be generally visible if you look inside the top of the throat -- raised numbers at the entrance to the venturi. Some venturis have some extra numbers here to confuse you (then, I think, the last no. is the venturi diameter). Some models had different venturi sizes over the years. Some can be interchanged.

thanks for the extra info.

so the 30 and 34 is similar to 40 and 48 IDA webers for example, very similar carb, just different throttle size 🙂

and anyone else care to confirm/deny whether they will interchange on the manifolds?

Danielle has a suprcharger here, some old thing that she wants to use 😉 made specifically for beetles, and the 30 fits the stud pattern on the top, but surely a 34 will give a little more power, especially in this application 🙂
