Hi, I was wondering what milage other kombi owners are getting so I can gauge what to expect from mine. I have a '71 with a 1600TP (flat stick it does 90kph... 100 down hill) I would like to hear from others with a similar setup.
Thanks :thumb

Hmm, there's heaps of threads with this kind of thing, try the search. I know it's pretty lousy, but should turn up something.

About 12l/100km on the open road. I get about 11l/100km in the '74 1800. Heaps more in town.

My split westy averaged 30 MPG up to Old Bar and back,
It has a stock 1500 single port engine, 3.88 ring and pinion .82 top gear and stock reduction boxes, we sat on 55 - 60 MPH most of the way, and it was loaded up too!!

Don't expect that out of a 1600 Bay, 20-22 mpg at best.

We have a '79 2L, which is new to us and has done 250,000kms on the original engine - we bought it from friends who bought it new. On the open road, and depending upon the wind, tuning and callibration of the dual carbies it get's up to 10kms per litre of fuel and seems to average about 9km per litre when we sit on approx 95 - 100km/h.

We're hoping that it'll get more efficient after a rebuild by a km or 2 per litre.

Mind you, as long as they run cool and you don't have to rebuild them all that often then surely that's better than a point or two of economy? I've been reading the Muir - "How to look after your VW for the complete idiot" (or some title close to that) and the thrust of his argument seems to be that good timing, good carby callibration, and the right fuel/air mix, and engine sealing all help it run as cool and efficiently as possible. Oh, I forgot. Do your valves yourself, in the morning, before the sun rises ...

Love to know what other kombi drivers are getting out of their engines.

G'day,
Hey Rhys the love of driving a Kombi is a very special😍,but I imagine you may have been combining it with that other kind of love😍:blush, Cheers.

Mad Manx, too many variables to say. The Desert Splitty varies from 14mpg to 25mpg depending on where I'm driving and if I've got the trailer on behind. And at a $1.56 per litre for Premium it costs me approx $6.50 more per 60lt than Unleaded so I just fill up and enjoy the drive. I also use an upper cylinder lube (Flaslube or ATF fluid) which also helps.
Cheers, Ian.

Well I've used the first quarter of my tank (around 15lt) and travelled 167km in hilly country and high winds.... not too bad so far I think 11km per litre.

I would be driving the manx for most of the time then

Any reason you HAVE to drive the kombi?

That is a lot of kms to feed.

... my fuel guage is pretty sticky - see how you go over a few trips, and by how much you need to refill it!

btw - we got from Adelaide to Melbourne in my wife's 1300 beetle on about 40 litres of fuel one time!

Well, my manx isn't registered, and working 7 days a week I don't really have the time (nor the money) to get it registered, And I do have a motorcycle (susuki DR500) but its in the middle of an engine rebuild (also delayed by my workload) but the main reason is I love to drive my kombi and its the only registered going vehicle I have.

I have noticed that the fuel gauge mustn't be in even quadrants as the second quarter was used in one trip to work and back.... mind you we've had 40knot winds here the last few days so, yeah, tomnseals I think your right it will have to be evened out over several tanks :thumb

ok tanks done..... I drove 430km from 51 litres of fuel which averages to 8.43 lt per km. Not too bad considering half those kays are in hilly country, and we've had very strong winds all week....... so I think 10km per litre maybe achievable👍

I've been getting about 8km/L around town and 9km/L on the open road. What's the age of your engine etc.?

I've recently had the carbies balanced on mine and the tuning done all of which helps a lot. I reckon a good rebuild would help by a few 'k' too. Is yours a recently rebuilt engine?

the bloke I bought it off said around 35000km ago the engine had a rebuild. when I picked my kombi up I wouldn't even do 45kph so when I got it home I replaced the plugs, points and condenser then put the timing light on it to find it was about 20* out! Then I could still only get 60-70kph from it so I replaced the fuel filtre and replaced the rusted out exhaust dampner with a small tail pipe (this made a big difference) other than that all I did is pull the excelerator cable through a bit for some more throttle and then returned the pict34 back to base settings then tuned it by ear. So it runs pretty sweet, just a wee bit underpowered!

Just a note to let you all know what I have been getting from a 1963 single cab with a 1380 Pobjoy engine coupled to a standard gearbox and reduction gears. Using low octane unleaded I was averaging 26 to 28 mpg ( 10.5l per 100km to 9.7l per 100km). At Shannons auto fest in Canberra recently someone advised that I should be using premium unleaded. I did this on a recent trip up to Lismore and back. Surprise, surprise I returned 32 to 34 mpg (8.5l per 100km to 8l per 100km). This is a substantial difference and well worth paying the extra for the premium unleaded. By the way the vehicle was cruising at 60mph for these consumption figures.

Way to go - nice performance out of an old kombi! I'd be enjoying that.

Well I've managed to get a tad more performance (sort of) out of my Kombi today. It has (had) the usual bent up accelerator pedal so I decided to repair it. On pulling the linkages apart under the cab I noticed the 3 way pivot plate where the pedal linkage connects to was slightly twisted- so I straightened it on the anval then wire brushed it and replaced all springs and slit pins washers etc........ anyhow its amazing the difference fixing that twist has made to the operation of the pedal. It sits around 6 inches from the floor at the tip now when it was around two inches before, and the motor now has a much better response. Worth while checking this out guys!!

By the way my 1380 is running a standard carbie that was rejetted by Stan Pobjoy. He says that a motor like that needs nothing else. I feel he is right as the engine is smooth and responsive as it is.

Check the choke....my 72 was pulling into servos on it own at one point as the choke cam on every time I started it. I get about 400 off a tank using short runs to work in traffic and about 460 on the open road. It's a 2.0ltr.

Getting it tuned every 3 months helps a lot. It seems happy at 90ks, but anything over 100 and it's off to the servo time....

I'm a tightwallet, so press lightly on the money pedal.

God knows what I get from the T3 Caravelle with the air on, probably mid 400 at best. Still I figure the extra fuel is less than the days depreciation on a Kia.

My suggestion is to dump as much junk as you can to reduce weight, keep the beast in tune, keep the speed down and make sure your drum brakes aren't dragging.
